About Good Friday
Good Friday is the Christian day of mourning for the crucifixion and death of Jesus, kept on the Friday before Easter Sunday. In 2027 it falls on Friday, 26 March 2027. It is a central government holiday in India, and churches mark it with fasting, the Way of the Cross and long afternoon services rather than celebration.
Good Friday is the most sombre day in the Christian year. Catholic churches hold no Mass, services run through the afternoon, and many families eat one plain meal. Easter, the celebration, comes two days later.
What do the different names for Good Friday mean?
Good Friday takes its name from an older English sense of "good" that meant holy or pious, not pleasant. Old English called the day Long Friday, for the length of its fasting and prayer. The idea that "good" is a worn-down form of "God" is a folk explanation without support.
Other churches use plainer names. It is Holy Friday or Great Friday in many traditions, and among Kerala's Syrian Christians it is Dukha Velli, the Friday of sorrow. The Malayalam name is closer to how the day feels than the English one.
Where does Good Friday fall in Holy Week?
Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter, and Easter moves. Western churches keep Easter on the first Sunday after the church's reckoning of the first full moon on or after 21 March. That puts Good Friday anywhere from 20 March to 23 April. Orthodox churches that calculate Easter on the Julian calendar often keep Holy Week later, so the date on the Indian holiday list is the Western one.
Good Friday closes Lent, the forty days of fasting before Easter, and sits inside Holy Week.
- Palm SundayJesus enters Jerusalem
Palm leaves are blessed and carried in procession; in Kerala the day is Kuruthola Perunnal.
- Maundy ThursdayThe Last Supper
Services recall the meal and the washing of feet. Kerala families share pesaha appam, an unleavened bread eaten once a year, with a coconut-milk and jaggery dip.
- Good FridayThe crucifixion
Fasting, the Way of the Cross, and the main service in the afternoon.
- Holy SaturdayThe day in the tomb
A quiet day; Catholics keep the fast and the Easter Vigil begins after dark.
- Easter SundayThe resurrection
The fast ends and the celebration begins.
What happens in church on Good Friday?
Good Friday services centre on the account of Jesus's trial and death, read aloud, and on prayer at the cross.
In the Catholic Church there is no Mass on Good Friday. The main service, the Celebration of the Lord's Passion, is held ideally at 3 pm, the hour the Gospels give for Jesus's death. It has three parts: the reading of the Passion, the veneration of the cross, and Communion from bread consecrated the evening before. In Goa the priest wears red and lies face down before the altar in silent prayer, and a veiled cross is uncovered in three stages.
Many Protestant churches, including Anglican and Methodist ones, hold the Three Hours' Agony from noon to 3 pm. The devotion was devised by the Jesuit Alphonsus Messia in Lima, Peru, and reached Rome around 1788. Catholic parishes, and some others, also hold the Way of the Cross: fourteen stations tracing Jesus's walk to Calvary, prayed on a hillside or around the church compound.
Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
How is Good Friday observed in Kerala and Goa?
India's Christian communities have kept their own Good Friday customs for centuries, and food is where they differ most.
| Community | What happens | What people eat |
|---|---|---|
| Syrian Christians, Kerala | Services from about 9 am to 3 pm; a crucifix carried in procession; the Way of the Cross in Catholic parishes | Many eat one meal: kanji (rice gruel), payar (cowpeas), pappadam and a bitter gourd dish. Many churches serve kaippu neer, a bitter drink of crushed leaves and vinegar |
| Malayattoor, Kerala | Pilgrims climb the hill church of St Thomas carrying wooden crosses, praying at fourteen stops on the way | The largest crowds come on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday |
| Catholics, Goa | Way of the Cross from about 6 am; at Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the centuries-old Procession of Tails (Xempddeachem Pursanv) which opens to the rattle of wooden clappers | Pez (rice gruel) with pickle; no meat or fish; no music or television at home |
Kaippu neer, also called choruka, stands for the vinegar offered to Jesus on the cross. It is meant to be hard to swallow, and people say so. Catholics generally fast by having one full meal and two small ones on Good Friday and abstaining from meat. Children, pregnant women and the sick are excused.
What should you say to a Christian friend on Good Friday?
Say something quiet. For Christians, Good Friday is closer to a day of mourning than a festival, so "Happy Good Friday" jars in the way "Happy" would at a remembrance service. Many Christians do say "Have a blessed Good Friday" to one another, and that is safe for anyone to use. If you are unsure, send nothing today and wish them a happy Easter on Sunday.
Do
- Use "blessed", "peaceful" or "thinking of you" rather than "happy".
- Keep the message short, and quote scripture only if you know the person would welcome it.
- At work, expect Christian colleagues to be at church in the afternoon or fasting; avoid scheduling a team lunch that day.
- Save the cheerful message, the cake and the chocolate eggs for Easter Sunday.
Avoid
- Don't send "Happy Good Friday" stickers or bright festival cards.
- Don't make weekend or long-holiday jokes to someone for whom the day is solemn.
- Don't offer meat, alcohol or sweets to someone who has told you they are fasting.
Two days later comes Easter Sunday, when "Happy Easter" is exactly right. The other great Christian feast of the year is Christmas. For the year's holidays, see the 2027 calendar.
How to wish someone on Good Friday
Good Friday is a day of grief and reflection for Christians, so a message should be quiet: thinking of you, a peaceful or blessed Good Friday, a line of scripture. Never "Happy Good Friday". Save the celebration for Easter Sunday, two days later, and keep workplace notes short and respectful of people who are fasting or in church.

Frequently asked questions
When is Good Friday in 2027?
Good Friday 2027 falls on Friday, 26 March 2027.
Can you say "Happy Good Friday"?
It is better not to. Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus and is a day of mourning for Christians, so "Have a blessed Good Friday" or "Thinking of you this Good Friday" is more fitting. Save "Happy" for Easter Sunday.
Why is Good Friday called "good"?
The word comes from an older English meaning of "good" as holy or pious. Christians also see the day as good because they believe Jesus's death opened the way to salvation, which is celebrated at Easter two days later.
What is the difference between Good Friday and Easter?
Good Friday marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus and is kept with fasting and sorrow. Easter Sunday, two days later, celebrates his resurrection and is a day of joy, church bells and family meals.
What do Christians eat on Good Friday?
Many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating one simple meal and no meat. In Kerala that is often kanji, cowpeas and a bitter gourd dish, and in Goa rice gruel with pickle; many Kerala churches also give out kaippu neer, a bitter drink recalling the vinegar offered to Jesus.
Why does the date of Good Friday change every year?
Good Friday is the Friday before Easter, and Western churches set Easter on the first Sunday after the church's full moon on or after 21 March. That places Good Friday between 20 March and 23 April, and Orthodox churches using the Julian calendar often keep it later.
What is the Way of the Cross?
The Way of the Cross, or Stations of the Cross, is a devotion in which worshippers stop and pray at fourteen points recalling Jesus's journey to his crucifixion. In India most Catholic parishes hold it on Good Friday, often early in the morning or on a hillside.
