About New Baby
A new baby card marks a birth or an adoption, and in India it usually arrives in the middle of a very specific fortnight: the mother resting at her parents' home, the naming ceremony being planned, and the birth waiting to be registered within 21 days. The best wishes name both parents, say something useful, and do not treat the baby as the only person in the room.
Most congratulations messages are written for the baby and read by two people who have not slept. That is the gap worth closing. The parents are the audience. The baby cannot read, is not offended by a plain sentence, and will not remember the card.
What happens in the first month after a baby is born in India?
In the first month after a birth, in a large share of Indian families, the mother does not go home from the hospital. She goes to her parents' house, where she stays through the confinement period that many families count as roughly forty days, called jaapa, sutika kaal or by a local name. A japa maid or an older female relative takes over the baths, the oil massage and the cooking. Visitors are filtered. Some households keep the baby out of view entirely for the first eleven or twenty-one days.
This has two practical effects on your card. The address you have may be the wrong one, so ask where she is. And the person you want to reach in week one is often the father, who is running between two houses, the hospital paperwork and his office.
That 22 per cent figure comes from a meta-analysis of 38 Indian studies covering 20,043 women. The risk factors the authors list are worth reading before you write anything: financial strain, domestic violence, marital conflict, lack of support from the husband, and the birth of a female baby. The last one is not a historical footnote. It is a reason to be careful about how a daughter is announced and congratulated.
What ceremonies follow a baby's birth in India?
The ceremonies after a birth in India run from naming in the first weeks to annaprashan, the first solid food, at around six months and mundan, the first head-shaving, between one and three years, with the names and days differing by faith and region.
- Day 1The first words
In Muslim families the adhan is recited softly in the newborn's right ear, and the iqamah in the left, soon after birth.
- Day 6 to 21Naming
Namakarana or barasala falls on the 7th, 11th, 16th or 21st day in different Hindu families. The father whispers the name into the baby's ear three times, and a maternal uncle often touches honey and milk to the tongue with a gold ring.
- Around day 7Aqiqah
Many Muslim families name the child and hold the aqiqah on the seventh day, with the baby's head shaved and meat distributed.
- Any dayNaam karan at the gurdwara
A Sikh family takes a hukamnama from the Guru Granth Sahib; the first letter of the verse gives the first letter of the child's name, and Singh or Kaur is added.
- Weeks to monthsBaptism
Christian families in Kerala, Goa and the Northeast usually baptise within the first few months, the date set with the parish.
- Around 6 monthsAnnaprashan
The first taste of solid food, usually rice kheer or payasam, fed by the maternal uncle or grandfather.
- 1 to 3 yearsMundan
The first head-shaving, at home, at a temple or at a family shrine.
The naming ceremony is the one you are most likely to be invited to, and it is not always a small affair. In Telugu and Kannada families the barasala cradle ceremony on the twenty-first day can be as large as a wedding reception, with a decorated cradle, turmeric, kumkum and flowers, and the baby swung three times before the blessings.
Registering the birth, and other things nobody mentions
Under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 every birth in India must be reported within 21 days, and registration within that window is free. Hospital births are reported by the institution, but home births fall on the family. Since 2023 registration runs through the central civil registration portal, and a delay past 21 days pulls the family into late fees, affidavits and, after a year, a magistrate's order. Offering to chase this while the parents sleep is the single most useful thing on the list below.
The other quiet fact: the Maternity Benefit Act covers mothers. It says nothing about fathers, and most private employers in India have no statutory paternity leave to offer. Whoever is around in weeks two to six is doing the work the law did not arrange.
Visiting a newborn without being a burden
Do
- Message first, name a window, and accept a no. "Free Sunday 5 to 5.30, or shall I come next month?" is easier to answer than "when can I come?"
- Stay twenty minutes unless asked to stay longer. Hold the baby only if offered.
- Bring food the adults can eat with one hand. Idlis, theplas, a dal, fruit that is already cut.
- Wash your hands before you touch the baby, and stay away entirely if anyone at home has a cold.
- Ask before posting a photograph. Many parents keep the baby off social media for the first year.
Avoid
- Do not turn up at the hospital on day one unless you are immediate family or have been asked.
- Do not ask about feeding, weight, the delivery or whether it was a caesarean. All four are common and none are your business.
- Do not comment on the baby's complexion. It is the most tired remark in Indian family life and it lands badly on the parents.
- Do not offer advice, especially about sleep. Somebody else already did, an hour ago.
- Do not kiss a newborn on the face.
If the family applies a kajal dot to the cheek or a black thread to ward off nazar, take it as it is meant: a small hedge against too much praise. One practical caution, though: the US FDA warns against kohl, kajal and surma because many preparations contain lead, and a 2013 CDC case report describes two young children with raised blood lead levels traced to a kajal that was 54 per cent lead. Keep any gifted kajal away from the baby's eyes.
What to write
For a formal or work card, keep it to two sentences and put the parents' names in it. "Congratulations to Priya and Arun on the arrival of their son" reads better than any verse about tiny toes.
The card for the baby shower is easy to write. This one is harder and matters more, because the attention usually drops off in week three, exactly when it is needed.
How to wish someone on New Baby
New parents are running on four hours of broken sleep and a phone that will not stop buzzing. A good message is short, warm, addressed to both of them, and ends with one concrete offer rather than an open invitation to ask. Skip advice, skip predictions about the baby's looks or future, and never frame a daughter as a consolation. If the baby is in the NICU or was adopted, say plainly that you are glad and leave the questions for later.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + regional language.
Frequently asked questions
When should you visit a newborn in India?
Message the parents and let them choose the day. Many Indian mothers spend the first six weeks at their parents' home and some families keep the baby out of view until the naming ceremony on the eleventh or twenty-first day, so week three or four is usually safer than the hospital or the first week.
How long do you have to register a birth in India?
A birth must be reported within 21 days under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and registration inside that window is free. Hospitals report institutional births; after 21 days the family faces late fees and extra paperwork, and after a year a magistrate's order is needed.
What should you write in a new baby card if you do not know the name yet?
Write to the parents instead. "Congratulations to you both, we cannot wait to meet her" works perfectly, and the name can come in your message on the naming ceremony day, which is often the sixth, eleventh or twenty-first day after the birth.
What should you never say to new parents?
Avoid comments on the baby's complexion, questions about the delivery or breastfeeding, unsolicited sleep advice, and anything that treats the birth of a daughter as second best. Studies on postpartum depression in India list the birth of a female baby among its risk factors, so that last one does real harm.
How do you congratulate someone who has adopted a baby?
Congratulate them exactly as you would any other parent, using the child's name and the words son or daughter. Do not ask about the biological family, the cost or the paperwork, and do not describe the adoption as lucky for the child.
What is a good gift for a newborn in India?
Something for the parents usually beats something for the baby, since clothes arrive in bulk: cooked meals for a fortnight, a laundry or house-help service, a good feeding pillow, or cash as shagun in an amount ending in one rupee. Ask before gifting silver anklets or a cradle, as many families have their own customs about who gives those.
