About Ram Navami
Ram Navami marks the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu in Hindu belief, on the ninth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra. It closes the nine days of Chaitra Navratri, and in 2027 it falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027. Homes and temples hold the main puja around midday, the hour the Ramayana gives for his birth.
What does Ram Navami celebrate?
Ram Navami marks the birth of Rama in Ayodhya, to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya. Hindus count Rama as the seventh avatar of Vishnu and as the model of a person who keeps his word even when it costs him everything.
The story comes from Valmiki's Ramayana and, for most north Indian families, from Tulsidas's Hindi retelling, the Ramcharitmanas. Many households and temples read the whole text over the nine days before Ram Navami and finish on the day itself. In Telugu homes the same nine days end with a wedding rather than a birth: Rama and Sita are married again in temple courtyards.
When is Ram Navami and how is the date fixed?
Ram Navami falls on Navami, the ninth tithi of the bright half of Chaitra, which lands in March or April. In 2027 it is on Thursday, 15 April 2027.
The rule that decides the day is not sunrise but midday. Panchangs look for the Navami tithi to be running during Madhyahna, a window of about two and a half hours around local noon, because that is the hour the Ramayana gives for Rama's birth. Madhyahna is worked out from your own city's sunrise and sunset, so the puja window in Chennai is not the window in Chandigarh. Take the exact minutes from a panchang set to your city.
Because a tithi can begin or end at any hour, two panchangs can pick different days. In March 2026 most panchangs and the central government holiday list put Ram Navami on the 26th, while the Ram temple in Ayodhya held its noon ceremony on the 27th. If a friend's family is keeping a different day from yours, neither of you is wrong.
How is Ram Navami celebrated at home?
Most families keep a light fast, hold a short puja at midday and rock a small cradle to mark the birth. Nothing here needs a priest.
- Clean and set upWash the puja area in the morning, put out a picture or small idol of Rama, and add flowers, tulsi leaves and a cradle if you have one.
- Keep the fastMany people eat only fruit, milk and falahar food until the midday puja. Older people and children often skip the fast and just join the prayers.
- Do the puja at middayOffer water, flowers, sandal paste and fruit during the Madhyahna window, and light a lamp.
- Rock the cradleAt noon the idol of the infant Rama is placed in a decorated palna and swung, and everyone sings Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram.
- Read or singFamilies read the Bala Kanda of the Ramcharitmanas, or the Sundarkand, or sing bhajans until the aarti.
- Share the prasadHand out panakam, sunthavada or sweets to neighbours, and in many homes food is sent to a temple or a nearby school.
How is Ram Navami celebrated in different states?
The day looks different across India: a river bath and a beam of sunlight in Ayodhya, a full wedding ceremony in Bhadrachalam, cold jaggery drinks handed to passers-by in Tamil Nadu.
| Place | What happens | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh | A dip in the Sarayu at dawn, then darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple | Since 2024 a set of mirrors and lenses drops a beam of sunlight on the idol's forehead at noon for about four minutes, called the Surya Tilak |
| Bhadrachalam, Telangana | Sita Rama Kalyanam, the marriage of Rama and Sita, performed in public | The state sends pearls and silk robes for the ceremony, a custom traced to the Qutb Shahi ruler who freed the temple's builder, Kancherla Gopanna |
| Maharashtra | Noon aarti in temples, the palna swung, shobha yatras through towns | Sunthavada, a mix of dry ginger powder, jaggery and sugar, is the usual prasad |
| Tamil Nadu and Karnataka | Temple pujas, and roadside stalls handing out cold drinks | Panakam (jaggery, dry ginger, cardamom), neer mor or spiced buttermilk, and kosambari, a moong dal and cucumber salad, all suit the April heat |
| Sitamarhi, Bihar | Crowds at the temple that marks Sita's birthplace | Ram Navami here is as much about Sita, whose own day, Sita Navami, comes a month later |
| Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu | A sea bath at Agni Theertham and temple processions | Tied to the stretch of the Ramayana in which Rama crosses to Lanka |
What should you write in a Ram Navami message?
Keep it short and human. A line about keeping your word, looking after family or starting something the right way fits the day better than a long verse, and it reads well to someone who is fasting and busy.
Do
- Use the name the family uses: Ram Navami in the north and west, Sri Rama Navami in Telugu and Tamil homes.
- If you are visiting, carry fruit, dry fruit or flowers rather than milk sweets, which some fasting families will not eat until evening.
- Offer food or a cold drink to anyone fasting through an April afternoon. That is the whole idea behind the panakam stalls.
Avoid
- Don't turn a personal greeting into a political slogan. Many people who keep the day quietly find that uncomfortable.
- Don't assume every Hindu colleague fasts or marks the day. It varies a lot by family and region.
- Don't fix a work lunch with meat on a day when several people on the team are fasting.
- Madhyahna
- The window of about two and a half hours around local noon when the Ram Navami puja is done
- Palna
- The small decorated cradle swung at noon to mark the birth
- Panakam
- A cold drink of jaggery, water, dry ginger and cardamom, offered and shared in south India
- Sunthavada
- Maharashtra's Ram Navami prasad, made of dry ginger powder, jaggery and sugar
- Talambralu
- Rice mixed with turmeric that a bride and groom pour over each other, used in the Bhadrachalam Kalyanam
- Shobha yatra
- A procession with music, tableaux and bhajan groups
Ram Navami closes Chaitra Navratri, which begins on Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. The autumn set of nine nights is Sharad Navratri, and the day Rama defeats Ravana is Dussehra. Hanuman Jayanti follows a few days later in most years.
How to wish someone on Ram Navami
A Ram Navami wish works best when it stays warm and simple. Name what the day stands for in the tradition, keeping your word and looking after family, rather than only saying "happy festival". For friends who fast, ask how the fast is going and offer food after it ends. Use the name they use at home: Ram Navami in the north, Sri Rama Navami in the south. Keep political slogans out of a personal greeting.

Frequently asked questions
When is Ram Navami in 2027?
Ram Navami 2027 falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027.
Why is the Ram Navami puja done at noon?
The Ramayana places Rama's birth in the middle of the day, so the main puja is held during Madhyahna, a window of about two and a half hours around local noon. Madhyahna is worked out from each city's sunrise and sunset, so the exact minutes differ from place to place.
What is offered and eaten on Ram Navami?
In south India the usual offerings are panakam, a jaggery and dry ginger drink, neer mor or spiced buttermilk, and kosambari, a moong dal and cucumber salad. In Maharashtra the prasad is sunthavada, made of dry ginger, jaggery and sugar, and across the north many people eat only fruit and falahar food until the midday puja.
Is Ram Navami part of Navratri?
Yes. Ram Navami is the ninth and last day of Chaitra Navratri, the spring set of nine nights that begins on Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. The autumn Navratri in the month of Ashwin ends with Dussehra instead.
Why do some panchangs give two different dates for Ram Navami?
The day is chosen by whether the Navami tithi is running during Madhyahna, the window around local noon, and a tithi can start or end at any hour. When Navami straddles two middays, panchangs and temples can land a day apart, as they did in March 2026, when Ayodhya kept the 27th and most of the country kept the 26th.
Do offices and banks close on Ram Navami?
It depends on where you work. Central government offices list Ram Navami as a restricted holiday that staff can choose, while several state governments declare it a full public holiday, so bank and school closures vary by state. Check your state's holiday notification rather than a national list.
Can someone who is not Hindu wish a friend on Ram Navami?
Yes, and it is ordinary courtesy in India. "Happy Ram Navami" or "Ram Navami ki shubhkamnayein" is always safe, and asking how the fast is going is even better received.
