About Vishwakarma Jayanti

Vishwakarma Jayanti, or Vishwakarma Puja, honours Vishwakarma, the divine architect and craftsman of Hindu tradition. Factories, workshops and artisans worship their tools and machines on Kanya Sankranti, the last day of the Bengali month of Bhadra, and in 2027 it falls on Friday, 17 September 2027.

Who is Vishwakarma?

Vishwakarma is the craftsman and architect of the gods in Hindu tradition. His name means "maker of all". In the Rigveda, where hymns in the tenth book are addressed to him, he is more than a builder: he is the creative power behind the universe, described as all-seeing, with eyes, faces, arms and feet on every side. In older Vedic texts the job of divine craftsman belongs to Tvashtar, and the two figures later merge.

In the epics and Puranas, Vishwakarma is credited with the great constructions of mythology. He built Lanka, Dwarka for Krishna, and Indraprastha for the Pandavas. He made the Pushpaka vimana, Indra's thunderbolt the Vajra, Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra and Shiva's trishul. That is why he is also described as the author of Vastu Shastra and the patron of architecture, engineering and mechanical skill.

He looks different depending on where you are. In western and north-western India he is shown as an old, wise man with four arms and a hamsa, which links him to Brahma. In the east he is a young, muscular man, and his vahana is an elephant.

The Brahmavaivarta Purana traces five craft groups to Vishwakarma and his wife Ghritachi: carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, coppersmiths and stone-masons. In south India, these communities are known together as the Vishwakarma community, and many families trace their descent to him.

When is Vishwakarma Puja, and why is it almost always 17 September?

Vishwakarma Puja falls on Kanya Sankranti, the day the Sun enters the sign of Kanya, or Virgo, in the sidereal zodiac. That makes it the last day of the Bengali month of Bhadra, which is why Bengalis also call it Bhadra Sankranti. Because the date follows the Sun rather than the Moon, it barely moves on the Gregorian calendar: usually 17 September, sometimes the 16th or 18th.

Calendar makers in Bengal and the east work this out using the Bisuddha Siddhanta system of calculation. The exact moment of the Sankranti can fall in the afternoon, so almanacs sometimes differ about which day gets the puja; follow the one your local temple or factory uses.

Not every region keeps this date. In parts of north India, Vishwakarma Day falls the day after Diwali, alongside Govardhan Puja. Other communities observe a lunar Vishwakarma Jayanti. The table below sets out the main forms.

In India, 17 September is usually a restricted holiday rather than a closed one, so offices stay open and employees may choose to take it off.

How is Vishwakarma Puja celebrated?

Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated at work, not at home. The shop floor, the garage or the carpenter's workshop becomes the temple for a day, and the workers gather together in one place to do the puja.

  1. CleanMachines, tools and the workplace are cleaned before the puja.
  2. Set upAn image or clay idol of Vishwakarma is placed in the shop or factory, often on a decorated platform.
  3. WorshipTools and machines are decorated and worshipped along with the deity, and workers pray for safety and success in their work.
  4. SharePrasad and a meal are shared by everyone who works there, from owner to apprentice.

In parts of Bengal and the east, people fly kites together after the puja, and the afternoon sky over some neighbourhoods is full of them.

The day also sits in the middle of the season of engineering and making: Engineers' Day, in memory of M. Visvesvaraya, falls two days earlier on 15 September, and in Bengal the puja comes a few weeks before Durga Puja.

What to write on Vishwakarma Puja

A good Vishwakarma Puja message thanks people for their skill and wishes them safe hands, working machines and steady orders. For a team or employer, a short note to everyone, including contract workers and helpers, means more than one to the manager alone.

Do

  • Wish the whole team, including drivers, helpers, security staff and cleaners.
  • Mention safety; a year without accidents is the real blessing people ask for.
  • In Bengal, use "Shubho Bishwakarma Pujo"; in Hindi, "Vishwakarma Puja ki shubhkamnayein".

Avoid

  • Don't pressure colleagues of other faiths to take part in the puja; inviting them to the shared meal is enough.
  • Don't send a generic festival forward to a workshop team; name the work they do.
For your team or workers
Vishwakarma Puja ki hardik shubhkamnayein. Thank you for every job done well this year. May the machines run smoothly and everyone go home safe.
For a Bengali friend
Shubho Bishwakarma Pujo. Hope your kite stays up longest today.

How to wish someone on Vishwakarma Jayanti

A Vishwakarma Puja wish is for people who make and fix things: factory workers, mechanics, carpenters, engineers, drivers and artisans. A good one respects their skill and asks for safe work and steady business in the year ahead. In Bengal and the east, "Shubho Bishwakarma Pujo" is the usual greeting. It is a working people's festival, so thanking the team matters more than grand language.
