About Anant Chaturdashi

Anant Chaturdashi falls on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, which in 2027 is Tuesday, 14 September 2027. Vaishnav households tie a fourteen-knot thread for Vishnu as Ananta, Maharashtra and Gujarat immerse their Ganpati murtis, and Digambar Jains close the ten days of Das Lakshan Parva.

Ananta means endless. The day takes its name from Vishnu in his limitless form, resting on Shesha, the serpent who has no end. The tithi is Chaturdashi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, ten tithis after Ganesh Chaturthi, which usually works out to ten or eleven calendar days later depending on whether a tithi is doubled or dropped that year.

Most people meet the day through Ganpati visarjan, because that is what fills the roads. But the older observance on this date is the Anant vrat, and a third community, Digambar Jains, closes a ten-day fast here.

How is the Anant vrat kept on Anant Chaturdashi?

The Anant vrat on Anant Chaturdashi is kept around a thread called the anant sutra or anant dora, which is worshipped and then tied on the arm. It is usually cotton or silk, dyed with turmeric, and tied with fourteen knots. Each knot stands for one of the fourteen lokas, the worlds that Ananta is said to hold.

  1. Bathe and set the seatThe vrat is kept from morning. A low wooden plank is marked with fourteen lines of kumkum, and fourteen puris and fourteen sweet puas are placed on them in the eastern and northern versions of the rite.
  2. Set the kalash and the Ocean of MilkA vessel of panchamrit, made of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar or jaggery, stands for the Kshira Sagara on which Vishnu reclines. A kalash and a darbha-grass serpent are added in the South Indian form of the puja.
  3. Prepare the threadThe anant sutra, with its fourteen knots, is wound around a cucumber and swirled in the panchamrit before it is worshipped.
  4. Read the kathaThe family hears the story of Kaundinya and Sushila. Sushila keeps the vrat and the household prospers; Kaundinya, doubting it, destroys the thread; everything is lost until he returns to the vow and keeps it for fourteen years.
  5. Tie the threadMen tie it on the right arm above the elbow, women on the left. It is generally worn for fourteen days, though some families keep it until the next Anant Chaturdashi.

Telugu, Kannada and Tulu families call the same vrat Ananta Padmanabha Vratam, after Vishnu as Padmanabha, the one from whose navel the lotus rises. In Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal the fourteen puris and the plank form is common. The Agni Purana links the worship of Vishnu's Ananta form on this day with release from accumulated wrongdoing.

The katha is almost always introduced as advice Krishna gives Yudhishthira during the Pandavas' forest years, telling him to keep the Anant vrat to recover what was lost. The detailed ritual instructions circulate under the name Bhavishyottara Purana. Worth knowing if someone asks you for a chapter and verse: the story reaches most families through the vrat katha booklet, not through a critical edition of the Mahabharata.

What happens on the last day of Ganeshotsav?

Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of Ganeshotsav: households do the closing puja, mandals take their murtis onto the road, and the day ends in visarjan.

  1. Morning
    Uttarpuja

The household does the closing puja, apologises for anything lacking in the ten days, feeds the murti a last plate and gently shifts it to signal the departure.

  2. Afternoon
    The procession starts

Mandals bring their murtis onto the road with dhol-tasha, lezim and, in Mumbai and Pune, a long slow crawl through packed streets that can run past midnight.

  3. Evening
    Visarjan

Murtis go into the sea, a lake, a river or an artificial tank. Household murtis are often immersed in a drum of water at home and the clay used for plants.

  4. The chant
    Ganpati Bappa Morya

Pudhchya varshi lavkar ya, come back early next year. It is shouted, not sung, and everyone joins in.

The immersion is where the environmental argument lives. The Central Pollution Control Board's 2020 guidelines recommend natural clay and natural colours and a ban on plaster of Paris idols. In June 2025 a CPCB expert committee told the Bombay High Court that those guidelines are advisory, that they cover immersion rather than manufacture, and that states may permit PoP idols provided they go into temporary artificial tanks and the material is cleared out afterwards. Maharashtra, which declared Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav a state festival in July 2025, sent idols up to six feet to artificial ponds that season, and Mumbai's civic body built hundreds of them.

In Gujarat the day is often called Ananta Chaudas or Ganesh Chaudas, and in many Gujarati and Rajasthani homes the thread and the visarjan happen on the same afternoon.

What the day means for Jains

Digambar Jains observe Das Lakshan Parva, ten days from Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami to Chaturdashi, each day given to one of the ten universal virtues: uttam kshama (forgiveness), mardav, arjav, shauch, satya, sanyam, tap, tyag, akinchanya and brahmacharya. Anant Chaturdashi is the tenth and closing day, and Jain tradition holds it as the day Vasupujya, the twelfth Tirthankara of this cycle, attained nirvana. The day after is Kshamavani, when Digambar Jains ask forgiveness of everyone they may have harmed.

Svetambar Jains keep an eight-day Paryushan that ends earlier, with Samvatsari on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, and say Micchami Dukkadam there. Digambars more often say Uttam Kshama. The wording differs; the act of asking pardon is the same.

So on this one date you may have a neighbour dancing behind a lorry, a family sitting quietly with a thread and a plate of puris, and a Jain colleague on the last day of a long fast. All three are observing Anant Chaturdashi.

Do

  • Match the message to the household. Ask which of the three they keep if you genuinely don't know.
  • For a Jain friend, write about forgiveness, not festivity, and follow up the next day with Uttam Kshama or Micchami Dukkadam.
  • If you join a visarjan procession, carry water and check on the older people walking; these routes run for hours in heat and crowds.
  • Offer to help a neighbour carry a household murti to an artificial tank. It is a genuinely useful thing to do that day.

Avoid

  • Don't send "Happy Anant Chaturdashi" to someone breaking a ten-day fast. Warmth yes, exclamation marks no.
  • Don't plan a heavy lunch or an office party for a Jain colleague on this date; many are fasting into the evening.
  • Don't hand a visarjan procession plastic garlands or thermocol decorations to take to the water.

What to write

A Maharashtrian friend
Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya. Ten days went too fast again. Hope the visarjan is smooth and you are home before three in the morning.
Parents at home
I know the house feels empty tonight. Do the aarti loudly enough for both of us. Morya.
A family keeping the Anant vrat
Thinking of you all on Anant Chaturdashi. May the thread hold and the year ahead ask less of you than the last one did.
A Telugu or Kannada friend
Shubh Ananta Padmanabha Vratam to your family. Hope the puja goes well and the prasadam lasts till evening.
A Jain colleague
You have reached the tenth day of Das Lakshan. Whatever I have said or done that hurt you this year, knowingly or not, I ask your forgiveness.
Neighbours whose mandal is immersing
Your pandal was the best one on the lane this year. Morya. See you next Bhadrapada.
A friend whose first Ganpati this was
First year with Bappa at home and you did it properly. Hardest bit is the empty corner tomorrow. Morya.

One practical note on timing: send Ganpati farewell messages in the afternoon or evening, when the procession is actually moving. Send Anant vrat wishes in the morning, before the puja. Send a Jain friend's note late in the day or the next morning, when the fast has been broken.

How to wish someone on Anant Chaturdashi

Three different days share one date, so pick your message by the person. For a Ganpati household it is a farewell: warm, a little wistful, Morya at the end. For a family keeping the Anant vrat it is a quiet blessing, not a party greeting. For a Jain friend closing Das Lakshan, skip festive wording entirely and write about forgiveness; Kshamavani follows the next day.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

When is Anant Chaturdashi in 2027?

Anant Chaturdashi 2027 falls on Tuesday, 14 September 2027.

What is the fourteen-knot thread on Anant Chaturdashi?

It is the anant sutra, a turmeric-dyed cotton or silk thread tied with fourteen knots for the fourteen lokas that Vishnu as Ananta is said to hold. It is worshipped with panchamrit during the Anant vrat, then tied on the right arm by men and the left arm by women, and usually worn for fourteen days.

Why is Ganpati immersed on Anant Chaturdashi?

Anant Chaturdashi is the tenth tithi after Ganesh Chaturthi, and ten days is the full length of the public Ganeshotsav that Pune mandals standardised in the 1890s. Households that keep the murti for a day and a half, five or seven days immerse earlier; the mandals and the biggest processions all end here.

What do Jains observe on Anant Chaturdashi?

For Digambar Jains it is the tenth and final day of Das Lakshan Parva, the ten days given to virtues such as forgiveness, truth and restraint, and tradition holds it as the day the twelfth Tirthankara Vasupujya attained nirvana. Kshamavani, the day of asking and granting forgiveness, follows the next day.

Is Anant Chaturdashi the same as Anant Chaudas?

Yes. Ananta Chaudas is the Gujarati and Rajasthani name for the same tithi, and it is also called Ganesh Chaudas in places where the day is mainly about the visarjan. Telugu, Kannada and Tulu families call the vrat Ananta Padmanabha Vratam.

Can you wish someone happy Anant Chaturdashi?

It depends on which observance they keep. For a family immersing their Ganpati, a warm festive message with "Ganpati Bappa Morya" fits perfectly. For someone keeping the Anant vrat or closing a Jain fast, a quieter blessing or a note about forgiveness suits the day much better than a celebratory greeting.

What happens to the clay after visarjan?

Natural clay dissolves, and many households now immerse small murtis in a bucket or drum at home and use the clay in pots and gardens. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve, which is why several states now require PoP idols to be immersed in artificial tanks so the material can be collected and disposed of afterwards.
