About Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival of Ganesha's appearance, and in 2027 the murti is installed on Saturday, 4 September 2027. Families bring home a clay Ganpati for a day and a half, five, seven or ten days; public mandals in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh keep pandals open until the immersion on Anant Chaturdashi.

The day is fixed on Chaturthi, the fourth lunar day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. The installation and first puja are done in Madhyahna, the middle stretch of the daylight hours, which is why panchangs publish a Madhyahna window rather than a single minute. When the tithi straddles two dates, the day on which Madhyahna is covered wins, and that is why a panchang set to Dubai or New Jersey can show a different date from one set to Pune.

An old instruction is attached to this Chaturthi: don't look at the moon. The vrat katha explains it through Krishna, who was falsely accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel after glancing at the moon on this night, and the blemish is called mithya dosha, a false accusation. Families who take it seriously keep the curtains drawn after dusk. Those who slip up recite the Syamantaka story as the remedy.

How did Ganesh Chaturthi become a public festival?

Ganesh Chaturthi moved from the front room to the public pandal in Pune in the early 1890s. Ganesha was a household god long before he was a street god: the Peshwas kept a large Ganpati at Shaniwar Wada, and Pune families held their own pujas indoors.

Krishnajipant Khasgiwale saw a public celebration in Gwalior and brought the idea home. In 1892 Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari, a physician with nationalist sympathies, installed what is generally recorded as the first sarvajanik Ganpati at his wada. Bal Gangadhar Tilak wrote in praise of it in Kesari in September 1893 and then pushed the format hard, because a ten-day religious procession was one of the few large gatherings the colonial government could not easily break up. Lecture platforms, melas and mass singing followed.

Credit is still argued over in Pune. The Bhausaheb Rangari trust says the first public idol was theirs and Tilak was the publicist; Tilak's admirers say the festival would have stayed local without him. Both statements can be true.

Mumbai's most visited murti, Lalbaugcha Raja, has a shorter and more specific origin. Fish and vegetable vendors displaced when the Peru Chawl market shut in 1932 made a vow for a permanent market and installed their first idol in 1934, dressed in Koli fisherfolk style. The name Navsacha Ganpati, the Ganpati of vows, comes from that.

In July 2025 the Maharashtra government issued a resolution declaring Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav a state festival, with grants for mandals and an official portal for pandal darshan.

What happens during the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi?

The ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi run from the installation of the murti on Chaturthi, through aarti twice a day, to the big immersion on Anant Chaturdashi, though many households immerse earlier by their own vow.

  1. Day 1 · Chaturthi
    Pranapratishtha and sthapana

The murti is brought in, installed in Madhyahna and worshipped with the sixteen-step shodashopachara. Modak, twenty-one blades of durva grass and red hibiscus go on the plate.

  2. Days 2 to 9
    Aarti twice a day

Households sing Sukhkarta Dukhharta morning and evening. Mandals run bhajans, talks, sports and blood donation camps. Neighbours drop in for darshan and prasad.

  3. Middle of the stretch
    Jyeshtha Gauri in Maharashtra

Two Gauri masks arrive as Ganesha's mother or sisters, are fed a feast and sent off. The Gauri days follow the Anuradha, Jyeshtha and Mula nakshatras, so they are not always the same numbered day.

  4. Day 2, 6, 8 or 11
    Visarjan by household vow

Dedh din (a day and a half), five, seven or eleven days are all normal. The length is a family's own vow, not a rule.

  5. Day 10 · Anant Chaturdashi
    The big immersion

Uttarpuja, then the procession to the water. See Anant Chaturdashi.

At the uttarpuja before the murti leaves, the family formally asks Ganesha to go, apologises for anything done wrong during the stay, and often shifts the murti slightly to signal the departure. The chant on the road, "Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya", means come back early next year. Morya is usually traced to the sixteenth-century Pune-region devotee Morya Gosavi.

How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated in different states?

Ganesh Chaturthi is not the same festival everywhere: it is Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra, Chavath in Goa, Vinayaka Chavithi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Gowri-Ganesha in Karnataka and Vinayagar Chaturthi in Tamil Nadu.

WhereNameWhat is distinctive
MaharashtraGaneshotsav, GanpatiUkadiche modak steamed in rice flour; mandal processions; Jyeshtha Gauri in the middle of the ten days
GoaChavath, ChovothA matoli canopy of monsoon produce hung above the murti, from areca and coconut to wild hog plum and fern; Tai the evening before, for Parvati
Andhra Pradesh and TelanganaVinayaka ChavithiUndrallu, steamed rice-rava dumplings; ekavimsati patri, twenty-one named leaves; the vratha katha read at home
KarnatakaGowri-GaneshaSwarna Gowri Vrata the day before, when married daughters are given bagina baskets
Tamil NaduVinayagar Chaturthi, Pillaiyar ChaturthiKozhukattai; state rules push clay and papier mache over plaster; many communities immerse on the following Sunday

In Goa the patri leaves carry extra weight. During the Inquisition, when clay images were dangerous to own, many Goan Hindu households worshipped Ganesha in the form of leaves instead, and the leaf offering stayed.

The immersion argument, honestly

The environmental problem is real and mostly about materials, not faith. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve; it settles as sludge, and the synthetic paints on it carry heavy metals into lakes and creeks.

The Central Pollution Control Board's Revised Guidelines for Idol Immersion of 2020 say idols should be made of natural clay and natural colours, and that PoP idols should be banned. In June 2025 a CPCB expert committee told the Bombay High Court that those guidelines are advisory, cover immersion rather than manufacture, and leave states to decide, provided PoP idols go into temporary artificial tanks and the material is cleared out afterwards. Maharashtra's policy that year sent idols up to six feet to artificial ponds, and Mumbai's civic body built hundreds of such ponds across the city.

What a household can actually do is narrower and simpler. Buy shadu maati or red clay. Ask for unpainted or natural-pigment finishes. Keep the murti small enough to immerse in a drum or bucket at home. Strip off the flowers, cloth and thermocol before the murti touches water.

Do

  • Say "Ganpati Bappa Morya" freely; in Maharashtra it works as a greeting, not a liturgy reserved for the devout.
  • Ask before visiting a home with a murti installed, and take off footwear well before the room.
  • Carry fruit, dry fruit or flowers if you visit. Sweets are welcome, though most homes already have a mountain of modak.
  • Wish Telugu and Kannada friends for Vinayaka Chavithi or Gowri-Ganesha, which begin a day or two apart from the Maharashtrian reckoning.

Avoid

  • Don't photograph a puja in progress without asking, especially the pranapratishtha.
  • Don't gift leather, alcohol or non-vegetarian food; most households keep a fully vegetarian kitchen for the duration.
  • Don't assume a colleague is celebrating. Ganeshotsav is huge in the west and south and almost absent in many other regions.

What to write

Parents at home
The house smells of ukadiche modak from here. Ganpati Bappa Morya, Aai and Baba. Wish I was doing the aarti with you tonight.
A colleague
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. Hope the pandal near you is louder than last year and the modak better.
A friend starting something new
Bappa is home and you start the new job the same week. Good omen. Wishing you a clean run with nothing in the way.
A Telugu or Kannada friend
Shubh Vinayaka Chavithi to the whole family. Save me some undrallu.
A friend far from home
The first Ganesh Chaturthi away is the hardest one. Put the aarti on, make one modak badly, call your mother. Morya.
Visarjan day
Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya. Ten quiet days after this, and then we do it all again.
A family in mourning
Thinking of you today. No festive wishes from my side, only that this year turns gentler for all of you.

Two small things make a wish land better. Name the murti or the mandal if you know it, because people are proud of their pandal. And match the day you are sending it on: day one is arrival and excitement, visarjan evening is affectionate and a little sad. The rest of this stretch of the calendar is worth a look too, from Hartalika Teej just before it to Diwali two months later, or the whole calendar for 2027.

How to wish someone on Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi wishes are about beginnings. Ganesha is the vighnaharta, the one who clears obstacles, so a good message names the obstacle: a new job, a house move, exams, a business finding its feet. "Ganpati Bappa Morya" travels everywhere; "Shubh Vinayaka Chavithi" suits Telugu and Kannada families. Save the loud farewell lines for visarjan day, not the first morning.

Frequently asked questions

When is Ganesh Chaturthi in 2027?

Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 falls on Saturday, 4 September 2027.

Why can't you look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi?

Hindu tradition holds that seeing the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi brings mithya dosha, a false accusation of theft, from the story of Krishna being wrongly blamed for stealing the Syamantaka jewel after glancing at the moon that night. Families who observe it stay indoors after dusk, and anyone who does see the moon recites the Syamantaka story as a remedy.

How many days should a Ganesh murti stay at home?

There is no fixed rule. Households keep Ganpati for a day and a half, three, five, seven, ten or eleven days, and the length is a vow passed down in the family. Public mandals usually run the full ten days and immerse on Anant Chaturdashi.

Are plaster of Paris Ganesh idols banned in India?

Not uniformly. The Central Pollution Control Board's 2020 guidelines recommend a ban on PoP idols, but in June 2025 its expert committee told the Bombay High Court that the guidelines are advisory and apply to immersion rather than manufacture, leaving states to set their own rules. Several states now allow PoP idols but require them to be immersed in artificial tanks instead of rivers, lakes or the sea.

Who started the public Ganesh festival, Tilak or Bhau Rangari?

Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari installed what is usually recorded as the first sarvajanik Ganpati in Pune in 1892, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak praised it in his newspaper Kesari in 1893 before turning it into a mass movement. Pune still argues over the credit, and both the first idol and the campaign that spread it belong in the story.

What is the difference between Ganesh Chaturthi and Vinayaka Chavithi?

They are the same festival under different names. Telugu and Kannada speakers say Vinayaka Chavithi, Tamil families say Vinayagar Chaturthi, Goans say Chavath, and Maharashtrians say Ganeshotsav or Ganpati. The offerings change with the name: modak in Maharashtra, undrallu in the Telugu states, kozhukattai in Tamil Nadu.

What should I say to a friend on visarjan day?

"Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya" is what the crowd itself is shouting, and it means come back soon next year. It works as a message because it matches the mood of the evening, which is affectionate rather than purely festive.
