About Jumat-ul-Vida

Jumat-ul-Vida, or Alvida Jumma, is the last Friday of Ramadan, when Muslims attend the Friday congregational prayer as a farewell to the month of fasting. In 2027 it is expected on Friday, 5 March 2027, subject to the moon. It is a Friday prayer, not an Eid; Eid al-Fitr follows a few days later.

On the last Friday of Ramadan, the midday prayer at a big city mosque fills every inch of space. Delhi's Jama Masjid draws one of its largest congregations of the year. At Hazratbal in Srinagar, about 80,000 people prayed on this Friday in 2026. The day has a name in Urdu, Alvida Jumma, the farewell Friday, and a mood to match: grateful for the month, a little sad that it is ending.

What the day is, and what it is not

Friday is the day of congregational prayer in Islam. The Jumu'ah prayer replaces the usual midday prayer, and it begins with a khutbah, a sermon. On Jumat-ul-Vida, the sermon usually turns to Ramadan itself: what the month asked of people, the charity still to be given, and the last nights left for worship.

When the call to prayer is made on Friday, hurry to the remembrance of God and leave your trade.

Quran, Surah Al-Jumu'ah 62:9 (own translation)

The name is not found in the Quran or in the hadith, and there is no special prayer prescribed for the day. Some scholars stress this, and some mosques treat it as an ordinary Friday with a Ramadan sermon. For most Indian Muslims, though, it is the most attended Friday of the year, simply because everyone wants to pray together once more before the month ends.

It is not an Eid. There is no festive meal, no new-moon announcement and no Eid namaz. People are still fasting, and they will break the fast at sunset as on any other Ramadan evening.

How the day is spent

  1. Before dawn
    Sehri

The pre-dawn meal, then the Fajr prayer; the fast begins

  2. Morning
    Preparing for Jumu'ah

A bath, clean or new clothes, attar, and an early start to get a place at the mosque

  3. Midday
    Khutbah and Jumu'ah prayer

Sermon on the farewell of Ramadan, then the congregational prayer and long personal duas

  4. Afternoon
    Charity and the market

Many give zakat or sadaqah; markets fill with shoppers buying for Eid

  5. Sunset
    Iftar

The fast is broken as usual, often with dates and water first

  6. Night
Prayer in the last ten nights

Tarawih, and for many, extra worship in the hope of Laylat al-Qadr

Jumat-ul-Vida always falls inside the last ten nights of Ramadan. Many Muslims believe Laylat al-Qadr, the night the Quran's revelation began, lies on one of the odd nights in that stretch, so the whole week is devoted to prayer.

Why the date can differ by a week

The Islamic calendar is lunar, and Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days depending on when the new moon is seen. If the month runs 30 days, the last Friday may be a week later than if it ends at 29. Communities that follow different moon-sighting committees can therefore mark Jumat-ul-Vida on different Fridays.

That is what happened in 2026. Many places, including Kashmir, kept it on Friday 13 March, since the following Friday could have been Eid. Where Ramadan ran its full 30 days, as in Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, 20 March was still a fasting day, so Alvida Jumma prayers were held then and Eid followed on Saturday 21 March. The date shown on this page is the expected one, and local announcements decide.

In offices and across faiths

The central government lists Jamat-ul-Vida among its restricted holidays, and Jammu and Kashmir declared a public holiday for it in 2026. Elsewhere it is a working day, so colleagues who are fasting will need time off around 1 pm for the prayer, and may need it more than on other Fridays because mosques are crowded.

Do

  • Say "Jumma Mubarak" or "Alvida Jumma Mubarak" if you want to greet someone. Asking them to remember you in their duas is warmer still.
  • Keep work lunches and food out of meetings with someone who is fasting. Schedule hard tasks for the morning.
  • Expect traffic diversions near large mosques around midday.

Avoid

  • Don't call it "Happy Jumat-ul-Vida". The day is about prayer and the month's farewell, not celebration.
  • Don't send Eid greetings early. Wait for the moon.

How to wish someone on Jumat-ul-Vida

Jumat-ul-Vida is a reflective day, not a celebration. The person you are writing to is fasting, probably tired, and thinking about the end of Ramadan. A good message asks for prayers, wishes that their fasts and duas are accepted, and looks ahead gently to Eid. \"Alvida Jumma Mubarak\" and \"Jumma Mubarak\" are both common in India. Avoid \"Happy Jumat-ul-Vida\" and don't send Eid wishes yet.

What does Jumat-ul-Vida mean?

Jumat-ul-Vida means "the Friday of farewell". It is the last Friday of Ramadan, when Muslims attend the Friday prayer as a farewell to the month of fasting; in Urdu it is called Alvida Jumma.

Is Jumat-ul-Vida the same as Eid?

Why is Alvida Jumma on different dates in different places?
