About Maha Navami
Maha Navami is the ninth day of Sharad Navratri, given to Siddhidatri, the ninth form of Durga. In 2026 it falls on Monday, 19 October 2026, though Bengal can keep it a day later. Families end the Navratri fast with a homa and kanya pujan, Bengal spends the last night of Pujo in the pandals, and the south keeps Ayudha Puja.
Navami is the ninth lunar day of the bright half of Ashwin and the last of the nine nights of Sharad Navratri. It belongs to Siddhidatri, the ninth form of Durga, the giver of siddhis, the powers that come from discipline and devotion. She is shown seated on a lotus with four arms, and the tradition says even Shiva received his powers from her. After eight days of worshipping the goddess one form at a time, Navami is the day the whole sequence is completed.
Don't confuse it with Ram Navami, Rama's birthday, which falls on the ninth day of the spring Navratri in Chaitra. Maha Navami is the autumn one, and its next-door neighbour is Vijayadashami.
Which day is Navami?
The answer depends on where you are. Most panchangs give Navami to the day on which that lunar day is running at the time of the puja. In some years Ashtami ends early in the morning, and Ashtami and Navami are listed on the same calendar date. Bengali almanacs count the day in their own way and can keep Maha Navami on the following day, with Bijoya Dashami the day after that.
State holiday lists follow suit, so Telangana, Karnataka and West Bengal do not always close on the same day for Navami. If you are sending a card to Kolkata, follow the Bengali date; the Durga Puja page explains why the almanacs differ.
Navami in homes across the north and west
For families who keep the nine-day fast, Navami is about finishing well.
- Navami homa or havan. A fire offering, often at home with a priest or the eldest member of the family reciting from the Durga Saptashati. Ghee, sesame, rice and samagri go into the fire with each verse.
- Kanya pujan. Families who are "Navami waale" invite nine young girls and a small boy, wash their feet, feed them halwa, puri and black chana, and give them small gifts, exactly as other families do on Durga Ashtami.
- Parana. The fast is broken only after the girls have eaten, with the same halwa, puri and chana, and the end of nine days of fasting food.
The last full day of Pujo in Bengal
In Bengal, Navami is bittersweet. It is the last full day the goddess spends in her parents' house, and everyone knows it. The day starts with Navami homa in the pandal and ends with the biggest crowds of the festival, out until dawn.
Many pujas offer bali, a sacrifice, on Navami. At Belur Math, and at most community pujas, it is symbolic: an ash gourd, a white pumpkin or sugarcane, cut with a single stroke. A number of old family pujas and Shakta temples in Bengal, Assam and Tripura have kept animal sacrifice. In 2019 the Tripura High Court banned it in the state's temples, and the first Durga Puja after the order at Agartala's Durga Bari was the first in 525 years without it. Families hold strong views on both sides; a greeting is not the place for them.
Navami is also the night of dhunuchi naach, men and women dancing before the goddess with clay pots of burning coconut husk and incense to the beat of the dhak. Ashtami is a vegetarian day in many Bengali homes, and Navami is when the mutton curry, kosha mangsho, comes back to the table.
The sadness of the night has its own poem. In Michael Madhusudan Dutt's sonnet Bijoya-Doshomi, written in the 1860s, Menaka, Durga's mother, begs the Navami night not to end, because when it does her daughter will leave.
Jeyo na, rajani, aaji loye taradale! Gele tumi, dayamayi, e paran jabe! (Do not go tonight, O night, with your stars. If you go, kind one, my life goes with you.)

What to write
Do
- Check whether your friend's Navami is the same day as yours before you send the wish.
- Offer to help with the havan or the kanjak lunch if you are visiting a family that keeps the fast.
- Join the dhunuchi naach only if you are asked, and keep your distance from the burning pots.
Avoid
- Don't say "Happy Dussehra" on Navami to a Bengali friend; Bijoya has its own day and its own greeting.
- Don't raise the bali debate in a festival message, in either direction.
- Don't send food photos to someone who is still fasting until the havan is done.
How to wish someone on Maha Navami
Navami wishes carry two moods. In the north it is the end of a fast and a day of thanks, so wish strength and good health. For Bengalis it is the last full day of Pujo, and a little sadness is part of it: say Shubho Maha Navami and mention the night ahead. In the south, pair it with Ayudha Puja or Saraswathi Pooja. Check whether your friend's Navami is today or tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions
When is Maha Navami in 2026?
Maha Navami 2026 falls on Monday, 19 October 2026. The exact date can vary by location and local calendar, so confirm with your community.
Is Maha Navami the same as Ram Navami?
No. Ram Navami, Rama's birthday, is the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri in March or April. Maha Navami is the ninth day of Sharad Navratri in September or October, the day before Dussehra, and is given to the goddess Siddhidatri.
Why does Bengal sometimes keep Maha Navami a day later?
Bengali almanacs assign the lunar day to the calendar day differently from most other panchangs. In some years that moves Maha Navami, and Bijoya Dashami with it, one day after the dates used in north and south India.
What is Navami homa?
Navami homa is the fire offering made on the ninth day of Navratri. Ghee, sesame, rice and other offerings go into the fire as verses from the Durga Saptashati are recited. In many homes the Navratri fast is broken after the homa and kanya pujan.
What happens at Mysuru Palace on Mahanavami?
On Mahanavami the head of the Wadiyar family performs Ayudha Puja at the palace. The royal sword and other weapons, the state elephant, horse and cow, and the family's vehicles are worshipped, a day before the Jamboo Savari procession of Vijayadashami.
Why is Navami night sad for Bengalis?
Durga Puja treats the goddess as a married daughter visiting her parents. Navami is her last full day at home before she leaves on Bijoya Dashami, so the night is spent in the pandals, with music, dhunuchi naach and a sense of a visit ending.
