About Sikkim State Day
Sikkim State Day, also called Sikkim Statehood Day, marks 16 May 1975, when the former Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim became the 22nd state of India after 333 years of rule by the Namgyal dynasty. It is observed across Sikkim with a state function in Gangtok, and in 2027 it falls on Sunday, 16 May 2027.
Sikkim State Day is one of the few statehood days in India that marks not a boundary change but the end of a monarchy. Until 1975 Sikkim was a kingdom with its own ruler, the Chogyal, and India handled its defence and foreign affairs. On 16 May 1975 it became a full state of the Indian Union.
How did Sikkim become a state of India?
Sikkim became a state of India through a two-year sequence of protests, elections, a referendum and two constitutional amendments between 1973 and 1975. The kingdom had been founded in 1642, when Phuntsog Namgyal was crowned the first Chogyal, and it came under British protection in 1861. After independence, a 1950 treaty made it an Indian protectorate with its own king.
- 4 April 1973Protests in Gangtok
Large demonstrations for democratic reform break out during the celebrations of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal's 50th birthday.
- 8 May 1973Tripartite agreement
The Chogyal, the political parties and India sign an agreement; the Chogyal stays head of state while an elected government is promised.
- 1974First elections under the new system
The Sikkim Congress led by Kazi Lhendup Dorjee wins 31 of 32 seats.
- September 1974Associate state
Parliament's 35th Amendment makes Sikkim an "associate state" of India.
- 9 April 1975Palace guard disarmed
Indian troops disarm the Chogyal's guard after clashes.
- 14 April 1975Referendum
59,637 voters back abolishing the monarchy; 1,496 vote against.
- 26 April 197536th Amendment in force
The amendment admitting Sikkim as a state takes effect and adds Article 371F on its special provisions.
- 16 May 1975Statehood
Sikkim formally becomes India's 22nd state, with Kazi Lhendup Dorjee as its first Chief Minister.
Article 371F still matters in Sikkim today. It keeps laws from the kingdom in force until they are changed, and gives the Governor special responsibilities for the state.
Why do people describe Sikkim's merger with India in different ways?
People describe Sikkim's merger with India differently because the same events can be read as a democratic choice or as a takeover. The Indian government, and many Sikkimese who backed the movement against the monarchy, point to the 1974 election, the referendum and the huge majority for ending the monarchy, and call it the arrival of democracy after centuries of rule by one family.
Other accounts put more weight on India's role. China and Pakistan called the referendum a cover for annexation. Critics have questioned how the vote was run so quickly and who took part. The Chogyal resisted a closer tie with India to the end, and a book by the former intelligence officer G. B. S. Sidhu describes a long operation by India's external intelligence agency to support the pro-democracy side from 1973. Morarji Desai, Prime Minister from 1977, later expressed regret about the merger, while also acknowledging that many Sikkimese had been unhappy with the Chogyal's rule.
If you are writing about the day, you do not need to settle the argument. "Statehood Day", which is what Sikkim calls it, is neutral and accurate.
How is Sikkim State Day celebrated?
Sikkim State Day is celebrated with a state function in Gangtok, and the state lists it among its government holidays. In recent years the Governor and Chief Minister have led the function, and the programme has included a parade, cultural performances by different communities and awards for sportspeople and public servants.
For the 50th anniversary in 2025, the celebrations on 16 May were held at Paljor Stadium and Manan Kendra in Gangtok. Butter lamps were lit in tribute to Kazi Lhendup Dorjee, a time capsule was sealed, and a "Run for Unity" ended at the stadium. The golden jubilee, themed "Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim", ran for a year, and on 29 May 2025 the Prime Minister joined a ceremony by video, releasing a commemorative ₹50 coin and a stamp.
The state has changed a great deal since 1975. A study by Shiv Nadar University's Himalayan studies centre notes that poverty fell from over half the population in 1973-74 to a small fraction today, while the state still depends on central funds for more than 60 per cent of its revenue.
What languages can you use for a Sikkim State Day wish?
Sikkim has one of the longest official-language lists in India, so the right language for a Sikkim State Day wish depends on the person. The Sikkim Official Languages Act of 1977 recognised Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu. A 1995 amendment added Newari, Rai, Gurung, Mangar, Sherpa and Tamang, and Sunwar was added later. Nepali is the most widely spoken of them, so a Nepali line is the safe choice for a mixed group.
- Chogyal
- "Dharma king", the title of Sikkim's Buddhist monarchs from 1642 to 1975.
- Rajya Diwas
- "State Day" in Nepali and Hindi.
- Rajya Diwas ko shubhakamana
- Nepali for "Best wishes on State Day".
- Tashi delek
- A Bhutia and Tibetan greeting wishing good fortune.
- Article 371F
- The part of the Constitution with special provisions for Sikkim.
Other northeastern states have their own days too: Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on 21 January, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on 20 February, and Nagaland on 1 December.
How to wish someone on Sikkim State Day
A Sikkim State Day wish is about the state and its people: the mountains, the mix of Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali communities and languages, and fifty-odd years of life as a state. Keep it warm and local. Avoid lines that call Sikkim "remote" or "exotic", and keep the politics of 1975 out of greetings; plenty of Sikkimese families remember that year in different ways.
