Regional occasions

23 statehood days and regional observances, from Kerala Piravi to Nagaland Statehood Day, with the date each falls on and what to write to someone from that state.

Most of the days here mark the creation of a state. Fourteen states came into being on 1 November alone, which is why Karnataka Rajyotsava, Kerala Piravi, Haryana Day, Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava and Andhra Pradesh's reorganisation anniversaries all fall in the same week.

Others mark a different kind of beginning: Goa Statehood Day for full statehood in 1987, Telangana Formation Day for the 2014 bifurcation, Sikkim State Day for the 1975 merger.

Why these matter more than the calendar suggests

A statehood day is a language and identity day as much as an administrative anniversary. Karnataka Rajyotsava fills Bengaluru with red and yellow flags; Kerala Piravi is marked in schools with Malayalam readings; Assam Day and Indigenous Faith Day carry histories that are still politically live.

That makes them the single best occasion to write to someone in their own language, even badly. A colleague from Odisha getting "Utkal Dibasa ra hardika abhinandan" on Odisha Day will notice the effort long before they notice the grammar.

What to write

Name the state and something from it: a place, a dish, a writer, the language itself. Generic pride reads like a corporate post.

Avoid two things. Don't reduce a state to a single stereotype, and don't wish someone on a day their community contests. A few of these anniversaries commemorate mergers or reorganisations that are still argued about locally, so warmth about the place lands better than celebration of the political event.

Most are public holidays in that state only, so a colleague elsewhere in the country will be at work.
