About Goa Statehood Day
Goa Statehood Day marks 30 May 1987, when Goa stopped being part of the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu and became India's 25th state, with Panaji as its capital. It closed a 26-year journey that began with the end of Portuguese rule in 1961. In 2027 it falls on Sunday, 30 May 2027.
Why is Goa Statehood Day celebrated on 30 May?
Goa Statehood Day is celebrated on 30 May because Goa became a full state of India on 30 May 1987. Until then it had been governed, together with the former Portuguese enclaves of Daman and Diu on the Gujarat coast, as the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu. Statehood gave Goa its own Governor in place of a Lieutenant Governor and full powers over subjects in the State List. Daman and Diu stayed a separate union territory.
Goa is India's smallest state by area, about 3,702 square kilometres, and one of its most mixed. The 2011 census counted roughly two-thirds of Goans as Hindu, a quarter as Christian and about 8 per cent as Muslim. That mix is a large part of what "Goan identity" means on this day.
How did Goa become a state?
Goa became a state through three decisions spread over 26 years: joining India, refusing to merge with Maharashtra, and choosing Konkani as its official language. Each is remembered on its own day, and Statehood Day is the last step.
- 18 Jun 1946Lohia's Margao meeting
Ram Manohar Lohia and Julião Menezes defy a Portuguese ban on public meetings, now marked as Goa Revolution Day.
- 19 Dec 1961Liberation
The Indian armed forces' Operation Vijay ends about 451 years of Portuguese rule; Goa becomes a union territory with Daman and Diu.
- 16 Jan 1967Opinion Poll
Goans vote on merging with Maharashtra. About 54 per cent choose to stay separate, now marked as Asmitai Dis.
- 4 Feb 1987Official language law
After a year of agitation, the Assembly makes Konkani in Devanagari the official language, with Marathi allowed for official purposes.
- 30 May 1987Statehood
Goa becomes India's 25th state; Daman and Diu remain a union territory.
The 1967 Opinion Poll mattered most. It is one of the very few referendums held in independent India. The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party wanted Goa merged into Maharashtra; the United Goans Party, led by Jack de Sequeira, campaigned for a separate Goa and persuaded the Centre to put the question to a public vote rather than decide it in the Assembly. Turnout was about 82 per cent, and the "separate" side won by some 34,000 votes. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has described that vote as the foundation of Goa's separate identity and statehood.
The language question came next. Through 1986, street protests under the banner "Konkani Prajecho Awaz" (the voice of the Konkani people) demanded official status for Konkani, and seven pro-Konkani agitators were killed during the protests. The Official Language Act passed on 4 February 1987, and statehood followed four months later.
How is Goa Statehood Day celebrated?
Goa Statehood Day is celebrated with an official state function, usually in Panaji. In 2022 it was held at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula, where the government felicitated former Chief Ministers, institutions and rural volunteers. In 2026 the function was at Kala Academy in Panaji, with Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan as chief guest. It included tributes to freedom fighters, from the 1583 Cuncolim revolt to the 1961 liberation, a commemorative postage stamp honouring the cartoonist Mario Miranda, and awards to dairy farmers.
The Governor and the Chief Minister issue messages the evening before. For most families, though, it is a quieter day than Liberation Day on 19 December, and many Goans abroad mark it through Goan associations in Mumbai, the Gulf, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Official counts of the anniversary vary. Goa's information department called the 2022 function the 35th Statehood Day and the 2026 function the 40th, so check the number before printing it on a banner.

What to write on Goa Statehood Day
A Goa Statehood Day message works best when it speaks to what Goans themselves care about: their village or ward, Konkani, the food, and a shared life across Hindu, Catholic and Muslim families. Leave out beach-holiday clichés; this is a day about self-government, not tourism.
- Goenkar
- A Goan; a person from Goa.
- Dev borem korum
- Konkani for "thank you", literally "may God do good".
- Parbim
- Konkani for "congratulations".
- Asmitai
- Konkani for "identity"; Asmitai Dis is Identity Day, 16 January.
- Mando
- A slow Konkani song form of Goan Catholic tradition, sung at celebrations.
- Bebinca
- A layered Goan dessert of coconut milk, eggs and sugar, made for feasts and Christmas.
Do
- Mention Konkani, a village or a Goan dish; it shows you know Goa beyond the coast.
- Include every Goan, whatever their faith; Goan identity was built by all of them.
- Get the dates right: statehood is 30 May, liberation is 19 December.
Avoid
- Don't reduce Goa to beaches, parties and cheap drinks in a message to a Goan.
- Avoid reopening the Konkani and Marathi or the merger debates in a greeting.
- Don't call Goa "Portuguese" in the present tense; Goans are Indian and proud of their own history.

How to wish someone on Goa Statehood Day
A good Goa Statehood Day wish is about Goa's own identity: its people of every faith, the Konkani language, the villages and the long fight to keep Goa separate. For Goans abroad, name the place, the food or the feast they miss. A Konkani word or two, like Goenkar or Dev borem korum, goes a long way. Keep it about the people, not beaches and parties.
