About Telangana Formation Day
Telangana Formation Day, officially Telangana Rashtra Avatarana Dinotsavam, marks 2 June 2014, when Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh and became a separate state, with K. Chandrashekar Rao as its first Chief Minister. In 2027 it falls on Wednesday, 2 June 2027. It is a public holiday in Telangana, marked by flag hoisting at the Parade Ground in Secunderabad and in every district.
For people who grew up in Telangana, 2 June is not an abstract civic date. Many families have someone who marched, went on strike, lost a year of college or lost a son in the movement. The day is part celebration and part remembrance, and good wishes hold both.
Why is Telangana Formation Day celebrated on 2 June?
Telangana Formation Day falls on 2 June because the state of Telangana formally came into being on 2 June 2014, under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act passed by Parliament in February 2014. It was India's 29th state at the time. Early that morning ESL Narasimhan, Governor of the undivided state, was sworn in as Telangana's first Governor, and at 8:15 am he administered the oath to K. Chandrashekar Rao as Chief Minister. Hyderabad had planned fireworks at 120 places across the city for the stroke of midnight.
The date closed a demand almost as old as Andhra Pradesh itself. The Telugu-speaking Telangana region of the old Hyderabad State was merged with Andhra State in 1956. Telangana leaders accepted the merger on the basis of safeguards, including jobs reserved for local people, set out in what was called the Gentlemen's Agreement. The complaint that those promises were broken, and that the region's revenue and water went elsewhere, drove the movement for the next fifty years.

Who is remembered on Telangana Formation Day?
Telangana Formation Day is also a day to remember those who died in the movement, usually called the Telangana martyrs. The largest group died in 1969: about 369 people, most of them students shot in police firing, according to the memorial that commemorates them. Gun Park, near the Public Gardens in Hyderabad, was built in their memory.
A second memorial, the Telangana Martyrs Memorial, stands on the bank of Hussain Sagar opposite the Secretariat. Shaped like a lamp and six storeys high, it was opened on 22 June 2023 to close the state's tenth-anniversary celebrations. It also remembers the young people who took their own lives during the later phase of the movement, a loss KCR spoke of with sorrow when he opened it.
How is Telangana Formation Day celebrated?
The main state function is held at the Parade Ground in Secunderabad, where the Chief Minister hoists the national flag, reviews a ceremonial parade and addresses the state. Similar flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades are held in every district, and schools, colleges and offices hold their own. The evening is for cultural programmes, public and private, built around Telangana's own songs, food and history.
Since 2024 the day has had its own anthem. "Jaya Jaya He Telangana", written by the poet Ande Sri around 2003 and sung throughout the movement, was adopted as the official state song and unveiled, set to new music by M. M. Keeravani, at the tenth Formation Day. There is a full version of about thirteen and a half minutes and a two-and-a-half-minute version for official events.
Telangana marks three dates of its own through the year. It helps to know which is which.
| Date | What it is | How it is marked |
|---|---|---|
| 2 June | Telangana Formation Day | State holiday, flag hoisting, tributes to martyrs |
| 17 September | End of Nizam rule in 1948 | Marked by the Centre as Hyderabad Liberation Day and by the state government as Praja Palana Day |
| 9 December | Telangana Talli day | Anniversary of the 2009 statehood announcement, kept by the state for its mother-goddess symbol |
What to write on Telangana Formation Day
Do
- Name something from the state: a district, a dish, Charminar, Bathukamma, a line of Jaya Jaya He.
- Thank the movement and remember its martyrs, especially in messages to older relatives.
- Keep workplace messages free of party names; the movement's credit is a live political argument.
Avoid
- Don't send "Happy Formation Day" to a friend from Andhra Pradesh as if it were their day too.
- Avoid jokes about Andhra–Telangana rivalry in mixed groups or office chats.
- Don't mix it up with the 17 September observance, which marks a different history.
- Avatarana Dinotsavam

- Shubhakankshalu
- Telugu for "best wishes".
- Jai Telangana
- "Victory to Telangana", the slogan of the movement.
- Sakala Janula Samme
- "Strike of all the people", the 42-day general strike of 2011.

The 17 September observance has its own page, Hyderabad Liberation Day. For other state days, see the 2027 calendar.
How to wish someone on Telangana Formation Day
A good Telangana Formation Day wish is about the place and the people who fought for it, not about any party. Mention Hyderabad, a district, the language, Bathukamma or the movement's martyrs, and wish the state well. "Telangana Rashtra Avatarana Dinotsava Shubhakankshalu" works for Telugu-speaking friends. Be thoughtful with friends from Andhra Pradesh, for whom the same date marks a painful split.
