About Himachal Day
Himachal Day, or Himachal Diwas, marks 15 April 1948, when about 30 princely hill states were merged to create Himachal Pradesh as a centrally run province. It is a gazetted holiday in the state, with a flag ceremony and parade led by the Chief Minister. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027.
What happened on 15 April 1948?
On 15 April 1948, about 30 princely states in the western Himalaya, most of them small hill kingdoms around Shimla, were merged into a single unit called Himachal Pradesh. It began as a Chief Commissioner's province run directly by the Centre, with four districts, Chamba, Mandi, Mahasu and Sirmaur, covering about 27,169 square kilometres. Its first Chief Commissioner was N. C. Mehta.
The merger did not come only from above. Through the 1930s and 1940s, Praja Mandal movements in the hill states pressed the rajas for representative government. In February 1948, weeks before the merger, Praja Mandal volunteers led by Pandit Padam Dev marched into the state of Suket in what is remembered as the Suket Satyagraha. Within days they controlled most of the state, and its ruler signed the accession. Leaders such as Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar argued that the hill states should form their own unit rather than be absorbed into Punjab, and 15 April 1948 was the result.
How did Himachal grow from 1948 to 1971?
Himachal Pradesh grew in steps over 23 years, both in land and in status. The 1948 province was much smaller than today's state: Kangra, Kullu, Shimla town and Lahaul and Spiti were still part of Punjab.

- 25 Jan 1971Full statehood

That long path is why the state has two formation days. Speeches on Himachal Day often recall what followed 1948, especially the land reforms that, as a Tribune retrospective notes, made most of the state's tenant farmers owners of the land they worked.
How is Himachal Day different from Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day?
Himachal Day and Statehood Day mark two different events. Himachal Day, 15 April, is the birth of Himachal as a political unit in 1948. Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day, 25 January, marks full statehood in 1971, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the new state. Both are observed; people often use "foundation day" for either, so it helps to be specific.

How is Himachal Day celebrated?
Himachal Day is celebrated with an official ceremony in every district. The Chief Minister unfurls the national flag and takes the salute at a march past at the main state function, which moves between district towns. In 2025 it was held for the first time in the remote Pangi valley of Chamba, and in 2026, the 79th Himachal Day, at Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, with contingents from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, state police, home guards, the State Disaster Response Force and NCC cadets. Other ministers lead functions at district headquarters, including one on the Ridge in Shimla.
The day is also when the government gives its state awards: the Himachal Gaurav award, the Prerna Srot Samman and civil services awards. Speeches usually pay tribute to Dr Parmar, often called the architect of Himachal, and the Chief Minister typically announces new schemes for the host district.
Cultural programmes follow the flag ceremony: Nati, the hill circle dance, performed by troupes in local dress, folk singers, and school children in woollen caps and shawls from their own valley. Families mark the day more quietly. It falls a day or two after Baisakhi, and many families combine the two with visits to relatives.
What to write on Himachal Day
A Himachal Day message reads best when it points to someone's own valley or town, because Himachal is really many small regions: Kangra, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Sirmaur, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi. Mentioning a local deity's fair, a dish from a dham feast or the walk to school in the snow will mean more than a line about the mountains.

How to wish someone on Himachal Day
A good Himachal Day wish is about home in the hills: a valley, a village, a local deity, the food and the people. For Himachalis living away, name the place they come from. Hindi "Himachal Diwas ki hardik shubhkamnayein" suits family and colleagues. Keep it about the people and the place rather than tourist postcards, and don't confuse it with Statehood Day on 25 January.
