About Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day
Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day, or Purna Rajyatva Diwas, marks 25 January 1971, when Himachal Pradesh became India's 18th full state. It is a gazetted holiday in the state, marked with a state-level parade and the Chief Minister's address, and in 2027 it falls on Monday, 25 January 2027.
How did Himachal Pradesh become a state?
Himachal Pradesh became a full state in stages over 23 years. It began in 1948 as a centrally run province stitched together from 30 small hill princely states, and it spent most of the next two decades as a Part C state and then a union territory, governed largely from Delhi. Full statehood came only after the Punjab hill districts joined it in 1966.

The name comes from Sanskrit: hima, snow, and anchal, lap. Today the state has 12 districts and a 68-member Vidhan Sabha.
What happened on the Ridge in Shimla on 25 January 1971?
On 25 January 1971 Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared Himachal Pradesh a full state from the Ridge in Shimla while snow was falling. Thousands of people stood in the cold to hear it. She arrived with Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar, who had led Himachal through its earlier stages and became the first Chief Minister of the new state. People lit bonfires at Ladies Park and danced on the snowy ground, and accounts of the day mention local deities being brought to the Ridge for the celebration.
Parmar is remembered as the architect of the state, and the state's university of horticulture and forestry at Solan carries his name. For many older Himachalis the snowfall on the Ridge is the detail they still tell their grandchildren.
How is Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day marked today?
Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day is a gazetted holiday in the state, one day before Republic Day. The main function moves to a different town each year. In 2026, for the 56th Statehood Day, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unfurled the national flag at Pragpur in Kangra district and took the salute from contingents of the police, Home Guards, NCC cadets and Van Mitras. Cultural troupes performed, and the Chief Minister used the speech to announce new schemes, including an Agriculture and Horticulture Commission.
That pattern holds most years. District headquarters hold their own flag ceremonies, schools hold cultural programmes with Pahari folk dances such as the Nati, and the Chief Minister's speech is watched for announcements on pensions, employees' arrears and new local offices.
What is the difference between Himachal Day and Statehood Day?
Himachal has two formation days, and people from outside the state often mix them up. Both are gazetted holidays in Himachal Pradesh.

What to write on Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day
A good Statehood Day message is short and specific. Name a place, a food or a memory rather than a slogan. For a Himachali living away, a line about home lands better than one about the state's development figures.
- Purna Rajyatva Diwas
- Hindi for Full Statehood Day
- Ridge
- The open ground at the top of Shimla's Mall Road, used for public events
- Pahad
- Hills, mountains; also shorthand for home in the hills
- Nati
- The group folk dance of Himachal, danced in a linked line
- Siddu
- A steamed wheat bun from the upper hills, often stuffed and eaten with ghee
How to wish someone on Himachal Pradesh Statehood Day
A Statehood Day wish for someone from Himachal works best when it names the state's own story: the long road from 30 hill princely states to full statehood, Y. S. Parmar, the snow on the Ridge in 1971, or the hometown the person misses. Hindi works for most Himachalis. Keep it proud without comparing the state to others, and don't confuse it with Himachal Day on 15 April.
