About Independence Day
Independence Day, Swatantrata Diwas, marks 15 August 1947, the day British rule over India ended under the Indian Independence Act. It is a national holiday in every state and union territory, and in 2027 it falls on Sunday, 15 August 2027. The Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort and addresses the nation, and schools, offices and housing societies hold their own flag ceremonies.
Freedom arrived at midnight, in a legislative chamber in New Delhi, while the man most associated with it was fasting in Calcutta. Independence Day carries both of those facts: the ceremony and the cost.
Why is Independence Day celebrated on 15 August?
Independence Day is on 15 August because that is the date the British Parliament's Indian Independence Act, 1947 set for the transfer of power. The Act received royal assent on 18 July 1947, and at midnight between 14 and 15 August India and Pakistan became independent dominions. The date was chosen by Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, who brought forward the British timetable in the hope of containing rising violence. 15 August was the second anniversary of Japan's surrender in the Second World War, a victory Mountbatten had served in as Allied commander in South-East Asia.
Just before midnight on 14 August, Jawaharlal Nehru rose in the Constituent Assembly at Parliament House to give the speech now known as "Tryst with Destiny".
At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.
Mahatma Gandhi was not there. He spent the day in Calcutta, fasting and praying to calm the riots between Hindus and Muslims in the city.
What does Partition have to do with Independence Day?
Independence came with the partition of British India into India and Pakistan, and the two are remembered together. Around ten million people were uprooted, and estimates of the dead range from 250,000 to a million. Many Indian families, especially Punjabi, Sindhi and Bengali ones, still tell 15 August as a story of loss as much as of freedom.
Since 2021 India has observed 14 August as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, the eve of Independence Day, in memory of those who suffered. Pakistan celebrates its own independence on 14 August.
If you are writing to someone whose grandparents crossed the border in 1947, a line that remembers their journey will mean more than any slogan.
How is Independence Day celebrated at the Red Fort?
Independence Day begins, officially, the evening before, when the President addresses the nation on radio and television. On the morning of 15 August the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, a 21-gun salute is fired, and the Prime Minister gives the Independence Day speech from its ramparts. Doordarshan broadcasts it live across the country. Nehru began the Red Fort tradition in 1947, and every Prime Minister since has followed it.

How do schools, offices and families celebrate Independence Day?
Across India, Independence Day starts with a flag ceremony: in schools, where students sing the national anthem, give speeches and perform patriotic songs and dances; in offices, police lines and housing societies; and in state capitals, where Chief Ministers hoist the flag. Sweets, usually laddoos or boondi, are handed out afterwards. It is a compulsory holiday for all central government offices and a holiday across states.
In north India the afternoon belongs to kites. Old Delhi's rooftops, Lucknow, Bareilly and Moradabad fill with patang baazi, kite fights where each flyer tries to cut the other's string. Lucknow's kite-lovers still quote the saying "Patang Lakhnaua, manjha Bareilly", Lucknow's kites and Bareilly's string. One popular account links the custom to protests against the Simon Commission in the late 1920s, when kites carried the slogan "Go back Simon".
Since 2022, the government's Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has asked people to fly the flag at home around 15 August. To make that possible, the Flag Code of India was amended to allow machine-made and polyester flags, and in July 2022 to let a flag on a private house fly day and night.
What should you write for Independence Day?
The best Independence Day messages name what freedom made possible: the vote, the right to speak, a school a grandparent could not attend. Thank a specific person if you can.
Do
- Remember Partition gently when writing to families from Punjab, Sindh or Bengal.
- Take down paper flags after the event and dispose of them privately; the Flag Code asks that they not be thrown on the ground.
- Keep workplace wishes inclusive; the day belongs to every citizen.
Avoid
- Don't use the day for jokes or insults aimed at Pakistan or any community.
- Don't display a torn or soiled flag, or print the Tricolour on things meant to be thrown away.
- Don't mix it up with Republic Day; 15 August is about 1947, not the Constitution.
For 26 January, see Republic Day. Gandhi's birthday, Gandhi Jayanti, is the third national holiday. Other dates are on the 2027 calendar.
How to wish someone on Independence Day
A good Independence Day wish is proud without being loud. Thank the people who won and who guard that freedom, remember that 1947 also meant Partition for millions of families, and speak to what freedom lets us do now. "Swatantrata Diwas ki shubhkamnayein" suits family; a plain English line naming the day suits colleagues of every background.
