About World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is marked on 10 October every year, and in 2026 it falls on Saturday, 10 October 2026. The World Federation for Mental Health held the first one in 1992, and WHO now sets a theme with it each year. Schools, colleges, hospitals and offices use the day for talks, free counselling and screening camps. India launched its national mental health helpline, Tele-MANAS, on this date in 2022.
The most useful thing many Indians learn on this day is that help is a free phone call away and that no one has to explain themselves to a receptionist first. That was the point of launching the national helpline on 10 October.
Why is World Mental Health Day on 10 October?
The World Federation for Mental Health held the first World Mental Health Day on 10 October 1992. It was pushed through by Richard Hunter, then the federation's deputy secretary general, and for the first few years it had no theme at all. Themes came later, and WHO now runs the campaign alongside the federation.
The theme for 2026 is "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change". It asks governments and hospitals to build services with the people who use them, not only for them. WHO cites its Mental Health Atlas 2024 to show how far that is from reality: only 45 per cent of countries reported working with people who have lived through mental illness when planning services, and about 49 per cent of admissions to psychiatric hospitals worldwide are involuntary.
WHO's own figures, for 2023, put around 1.2 billion people, nearly one in seven worldwide, living with a mental disorder. Anxiety conditions affect about 470 million and depression about 322 million. Only about a third of people with depression receive formal care.
What does mental health care look like in India?
The single most quoted Indian number comes from the National Mental Health Survey of 2015-16, run by NIMHANS, Bengaluru across 12 states with 34,802 people. It found that about 10.6 per cent of adults had a mental disorder at the time of the survey, and that between 70 and 92 per cent of them were getting no treatment at all, depending on the condition. That share, called the treatment gap, is the reason the day matters more here than the posters suggest.
Two changes since then are worth knowing about.
The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 gives every person the right to mental health care from government-run or government-funded services, allows an adult to write an advance directive saying how they want to be treated if they become unwell, and, in Section 115, removes the threat of prosecution from anyone who attempts suicide.
Tele-MANAS came next. The National Tele Mental Health Programme was announced in the Union Budget for 2022-23 and launched on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2022, with NIMHANS as the lead centre and IIIT-Bangalore providing the technology. Prasar Bharati reported 51 cells across all states and union territories and more than 10 lakh calls by May 2024, up from about 12,000 calls in December 2022.
Alongside these sit the District Mental Health Programme, which puts psychiatric services in district hospitals, and Manodarpan, the education ministry's counselling support for students.
What should you say instead of "just be positive"?
Say less, ask more, and make one concrete offer. Most people who are struggling are not looking for a solution from you. They are checking whether it is safe to say the next sentence.
| Common line | Why it hurts | Say this instead |
|---|---|---|
| "Just be positive" | Turns an illness into a character flaw | "That sounds heavy. How long has it been like this?" |
| "Everyone gets stressed" | Compares pain and dismisses it | "I don't know what this feels like. Tell me." |
| "You should do yoga" | Advice before listening | "Is there anything that has helped even a little?" |
| "Don't tell anyone, log kya kahenge" | Adds shame to the illness | "Whoever you tell, I'm on your side." |
| "You have everything, why are you sad?" | Suggests the person is ungrateful | "Being sad doesn't need a reason to be real." |
Do
- Ask before advising. "Do you want to talk, or do you want company?" covers most situations.
- Offer one specific thing: a call at nine, a lift to the doctor, dinner on Sunday.
- Keep it private. A public post about someone's illness is not support.
- Treat medicines and therapy as normal, the way you would treat BP tablets.
- At work, approve the leave without asking what for.
Avoid
- Don't tell someone to stop their psychiatric medicine.
- Don't share a friend's diagnosis with family or colleagues.
- Don't use words like mad, pagal or psycho, even as a joke.
- Don't make World Mental Health Day the only day you check in.

How to wish someone on World Mental Health Day
This is not a Happy day, so skip the word. The best messages are private, short and specific: you have been on my mind, I am free on Thursday, do you want to talk or do you want company. If you are writing to a team, share the helpline number and say plainly that taking leave for mental health is fine. Do not diagnose anyone, and do not turn someone's illness into a lesson for others.

Frequently asked questions
When is World Mental Health Day in 2026?
World Mental Health Day 2026 falls on Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Why is World Mental Health Day on 10 October?
The World Federation for Mental Health chose the date for its first observance on 10 October 1992, at the initiative of Richard Hunter, the federation's deputy secretary general at the time. It has been held on the same date every year since, and WHO now runs the campaign with the federation.
What is the theme of World Mental Health Day?
WHO and the World Federation for Mental Health set a new theme each year. The theme for 2026 is "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change", which asks for mental health services to be designed with the people who actually use them.
Should I say "Happy World Mental Health Day"?
Better not to. The day is about illness, stigma and access to care, so a cheerful greeting reads as tone-deaf to anyone struggling. A private check-in, or a message telling your team that help exists and leave will be approved, does far more.
What is India's mental health helpline number?
Tele-MANAS, the national mental health helpline run by the health ministry, is on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416. It is free, open 24 hours a day, available in English, Hindi and many regional languages, and was launched on World Mental Health Day in 2022.
How many Indians live with a mental health condition?
The National Mental Health Survey of 2015-16, conducted by NIMHANS across 12 states, found that about 10.6 per cent of adults had a mental disorder at the time of the survey. Between 70 and 92 per cent of them were receiving no treatment, depending on the condition.
What can a workplace actually do on World Mental Health Day?
Three things beat a poster: put the Tele-MANAS number where people can see it, say clearly that leave for mental health will be approved without questions, and have a senior person speak first so juniors know it is safe. A single talk by a counsellor helps only if the first two are true.
