About World Post Day

World Post Day is observed on 9 October, the day the Universal Postal Union was created by the Treaty of Bern in 1874. The 1969 postal congress in Tokyo made it an annual observance. In India the Department of Posts uses it to open National Postal Week, and India Post runs the world's largest postal network. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 9 October 2026.

A letter posted in a village in Bastar reaches an address in Oslo because 192 countries agreed, 150 years ago, to treat each other's mail as their own. World Post Day is the anniversary of that agreement.

Why is World Post Day celebrated on 9 October?

World Post Day is celebrated on 9 October because the Universal Postal Union was created on that date in 1874, when 22 countries signed the Treaty of Bern in Switzerland. It was first called the General Postal Union and took its present name in 1878. The 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo turned the anniversary into World Post Day. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 9 October 2026.

The UPU has 192 member countries and has been a specialised agency of the United Nations since 1948. Its work is unglamorous and essential: agreeing rates for international mail, requiring that foreign mail be handled like domestic mail, and settling "terminal dues", the money one country pays another for delivering mail it did not carry. India joined in 1876.

How big is India Post?

India Post runs the largest postal network in the world, with 1,64,999 post offices as of 31 March 2025. More than nine in ten of them are rural. On average, one post office serves 7,339 people and about 20 square kilometres.

Type of post officeWhat it doesHow many in India
Head post officeThe main office of a postal division, with the full range of services810
Sub post officeA departmental office in a town or large village24,281
Branch post officeA small rural office, usually run by a Gramin Dak Sevak1,39,908
Rural post offices in totalOffices outside towns and cities1,49,385 (90.54 per cent)
Urban post offices in totalOffices in towns and cities15,614 (9.46 per cent)

The department has also become a banking channel. In 2023-24 alone it opened over 5,700 post offices in villages with no bank, so that people would have a banking point within five kilometres. For a large part of rural India, the post office is still the nearest place to send money, buy insurance or open a savings account.

Letters have not disappeared either. Speed Post and registered letter traffic reached 87.64 crore items in 2024-25, earning about ₹2,353 crore, according to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's statistical handbook.

How did India's postal system begin?

India's postal system predates the Post Office as an institution, but the modern chain starts in 1727 with the first East India Company post office in Calcutta.

  1. 1727
    First post office

The East India Company opens a post office in Calcutta; Madras follows in 1786 and Bombay in 1794.

  2. 1852
    Asia's first stamp

The Scinde Dawk, a circular adhesive stamp, is issued in Sindh on 1 July.

  3. 1854
    One country, one rate

The Post Office Act brings uniform postage across India and puts the service under a single Director General.

  4. 1876
    India joins the UPU

Indian mail becomes part of the international system on 1 July.

  5. 1972
    The PIN code

Shriram Bhikaji Velankar introduces the six-digit Postal Index Number on 15 August.

  6. 2025
    1.65 lakh offices

India Post reports 1,64,999 post offices, over 90 per cent of them rural.

The PIN code is worth understanding, because most people write it without knowing what it says. The first digit marks the postal region, with 9 reserved for the Army Postal Service. The second narrows it to a sub-region, the third to a sorting district, and the last three to the delivery post office itself. A wrong last digit can send a parcel to the right town and the wrong beat.

What is National Postal Week in India?

The Department of Posts marks World Post Day by opening National Postal Week, which runs from 9 to 15 October. Each day is given to a different part of the work. In 2020, for example, 9 October was World Post Day, followed by Banking Day, Postal Life Insurance Day, Philately Day, Business Development Day and Mail Day. Circles hold exhibitions, school visits, letter-writing competitions and customer meetings, and Philately Day events are held at the National Philatelic Museum in Delhi.

What should you write on World Post Day?

Two audiences. First, the delivery staff. Your postman knows your building better than your neighbours do, and almost never hears from anyone except when something is late. Second, whoever still sends you things on paper.

For your postman
Happy World Post Day, bhaiya. Third floor, no lift, and you still come up with the registered letters. Thank you for the last eight years.
For a Gramin Dak Sevak
Happy World Post Day. The branch post office is the bank, the insurance office and the letter box for the whole village. That is all on you.
For a friend who still writes letters
Happy World Post Day. Your last letter is on my desk with the stamp still on it. Mine is going in the post today, properly, with a PIN code and everything.
For sorting and RMS staff
Happy World Post Day to the people in the sorting hall at 2 am. Nobody sees that shift and every parcel depends on it.
For a stamp collector
Happy World Post Day. Philately Day is this week. Go and argue with the counter clerk about the new issue, as you do every year.
For grandparents
Happy World Post Day, Nani. You wrote on inland letters in handwriting we could barely read and we kept every one. Posting you a card today.
For a colleague in the Department of Posts
Happy World Post Day. Savings accounts, insurance, Aadhaar, parcels, and still the letters. Your counter does more than most banks.
For a friend abroad
Happy World Post Day. Sent you something by post. It will take three weeks and be worth it.

Do

  • Actually post something today; a card in an envelope outlasts any message.
  • Write the PIN code clearly and put the sender's address on the back.
  • Thank the delivery staff by name if you know it, and in person if you can.

Avoid

  • Don't hand cash to a postman as a festival tip and call it a thank-you; a written note and sweets are better received.
  • Don't send fragile or valuable items by ordinary post; use registered or Speed Post and keep the receipt.

Related days include World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on 17 May, World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April, and for the cards themselves, Thank You and Miss You notes.

How to wish someone on World Post Day

Two kinds of message suit this day. One is to the people who deliver: the postman on your beat, the branch postmaster in a village, the sorting staff nobody sees. The other is to whoever still writes to you by hand. Best of all, post something. A card that arrives in an envelope is the only greeting anyone keeps in a drawer.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Write a short, specific note: how long they have been on your beat, the floor they climb, the parcels they have saved. A handwritten card handed over in person means more than a cash tip, which many delivery staff find awkward.
