About World Students’ Day

World Students' Day is observed in India on 15 October, the birth anniversary of former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who was born in Rameswaram in 1931 and spent his last years teaching and speaking to students. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 15 October 2026. It is not a UN-recognised day and not a holiday; schools and colleges mark it with talks, science activities and readings from Kalam's life.

Most days in the Indian calendar that honour a person are about what that person did. World Students' Day is about what A. P. J. Abdul Kalam kept asking of others. He spent his last years travelling to schools and colleges, and he died in a lecture hall, mid-talk, in front of students.

Why is World Students' Day celebrated on 15 October?

World Students' Day is observed on 15 October because it is A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's birthday. Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, to a Muslim family; his father owned boats and served as imam of the local mosque. As a boy he delivered newspapers to help the household, and he went on to study physics at St Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, and aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology.

He became India's best-known scientist-administrator, then its 11th President, and after leaving office he spent most of his time teaching and speaking to students. On 27 July 2015 he collapsed while giving a lecture at IIM Shillong and died of cardiac arrest. Linking his birthday to students was a natural step for the admirers who began marking it.

Is World Students' Day a UN day?

No. World Students' Day on 15 October is not on the United Nations list of international days, and there is no UN resolution establishing it. The claim that the UN declared Kalam's birthday World Students' Day, often repeated online, is not supported by the UN's own list. It is an Indian observance that grew out of admiration for Kalam.

It is also easy to confuse with International Students' Day, which is a different day with a different history.

DayDateOriginWhere it is marked

International Students' Day17 NovemberNazi forces storming Czech universities in Prague in 1939, after student protestsStudent organisations in many countries
International Day of Rural Women15 OctoberA UN day for the role of rural womenWorldwide, including India

If you are writing for a school newsletter or an official post, "Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's birth anniversary, observed as World Students' Day in India" is accurate and avoids the UN claim.

How do schools and colleges mark World Students' Day?

World Students' Day is marked mostly inside schools and colleges, and the best observances are small and hands-on, in the spirit of a man who preferred a question from a student to applause.

  • Science and model exhibitions. Model rockets and satellites suit a day named for the man who led India's first satellite launch vehicle.
  • Reading sessions. Chapters from *Wings of Fire*, especially the Rameswaram childhood chapters, work well for middle school students.
  • Questions to a scientist. Inviting a local engineer, doctor or ISRO or DRDO retiree for an open question session is closer to what Kalam did than a speech.
  • Recognising quiet effort. Some schools use the day to thank students who did not top the class but kept going: the first in their family at college, the ones who work after school.

For people outside the classroom, the day is a good excuse to send a note to a student you know. Exams, hostel homesickness and career pressure are real, and a message that says "I believe in you" can do more than a forwarded quote.

The Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Memorial at Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram, built by the DRDO and opened in 2017, holds a bronze statue of Kalam playing the veena, missile replicas and hundreds of paintings from his life. It is worth a visit for any student travelling to Rameswaram.

Do

  • Write to a specific student about a specific thing they are working on.
  • Keep messages free of pressure about ranks and marks.
  • If you quote Kalam, use a line you can trace to his books or speeches.

Avoid

  • Don't repeat "UN declared this day" in school posts or speeches; it isn't true.
  • Don't turn the day into a lecture about how students today are distracted.

What to write on World Students' Day

For your child
Happy Students' Day. You work harder than you think you do, and I see it even when the marks don't show it. Proud of you.
For a student away at college
Happy World Students' Day. First semester is hard for everyone. Eat properly, call home, and ask the question in class even if it feels silly.
For a friend preparing for an entrance exam
Happy Students' Day. Kalam was a newspaper boy from Rameswaram before he built rockets. One exam doesn't decide who you'll become.
For a first-generation college student
Happy Students' Day. You are the first in your family to sit in that classroom. That's already an achievement.
For an older learner going back to study
Happy World Students' Day. It takes nerve to be a student again with a job and a family. Keep going.
For a class or school group
On Dr Kalam's birthday, here's to every student who asks "why" one more time than the teacher expected.

Teachers get their own day on 5 September, Teachers' Day, and Maulana Azad's birthday on 11 November is National Education Day. The UN's International Day of Rural Women falls on the same date as World Students' Day.

How to wish someone on World Students’ Day

A good World Students' Day message encourages a particular student rather than repeating a Kalam quote. Mention what they are working on, a hard exam, a first semester away from home, a project they care about, and say you believe in them. Keep it warm and free of pressure about marks. For older learners and first-generation students, recognise the effort it took to be in the classroom at all.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
