About Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed on 26 July, marks the end of the Kargil War in 1999, when the Indian Army completed Operation Vijay and cleared Pakistani intruders from the heights above Kargil and Dras in Ladakh. It honours the 527 Indian servicemen who died in the fighting. In 2027 it falls on Monday, 26 July 2027.
What happened in the Kargil War?
The Kargil War was fought between May and July 1999 after Pakistani soldiers and militants crossed the Line of Control and occupied posts on the mountain ridges above Kargil and Dras, in what was then Jammu and Kashmir and is now Ladakh. From those heights they could fire on National Highway 1, the road that carried supplies to Leh and the Siachen area. India's response was Operation Vijay. The Indian Air Force supported it with Operation Safed Sagar, flying strikes at altitudes where aircraft had rarely fought before.
The Indian positions to be retaken sat around 5,000 metres and higher, in thin air and cold, with Indian troops climbing near-vertical slopes under fire from enemies dug in above them. Most assaults went in at night. Tololing was taken by mid-June, Tiger Hill in early July, and Point 4875 soon after. By 26 July 1999 the Army announced that the last intruders had been cleared, and that date became Kargil Vijay Diwas.
- 3 May 1999Intrusion reported
Shepherds report armed men on the ridges; Army patrols, including one led by Captain Saurabh Kalia, confirm the occupation.
- 26 May 1999Air Force joins
Operation Safed Sagar begins air strikes on the occupied positions.
- 13–14 Jun 1999Tololing recaptured
The first major height is retaken in the Dras sector.
- 4–8 Jul 1999Tiger Hill and Point 4875
Two of the war's hardest battles; Point 4875 is later renamed Batra Top.
- 26 Jul 1999Operation Vijay complete
The Army declares all positions cleared.
The war cost 527 Indian lives, and 1,363 more were wounded. It was also one of only two conventional wars fought between nuclear-armed states, and the first war many Indian families followed on television, which is why it is remembered so personally.
Who were the Param Vir Chakra awardees of Kargil?
Four soldiers received the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest wartime gallantry award, for the Kargil War. Two of the awards were posthumous.
| Name | Unit | Award | Remembered for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Captain Vikram Batra | 13 JAK Rifles | Posthumous | Point 5140 on 20 June and the assault on Point 4875, now called Batra Top |

Many more officers and soldiers received the Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra and other honours. Their names are engraved on a pink sandstone wall at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, which faces Tololing, Tiger Hill and Point 4875.
How is Kargil Vijay Diwas observed?
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed with ceremonies at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras and at war memorials across the country. It is not a public holiday.
The main event is a two-day programme at Dras. On the evening of 25 July the Army holds a Shaurya Sandhya: families of the fallen are felicitated, lamps are lit, interfaith prayers are said and bands play. In 2026, the 27th anniversary, the programme also included the presentation of kalash holding soil from the home villages of the martyrs. On 26 July the Shradhanjali Samaroh follows, with wreaths laid at the memorial's cenotaph by the Defence Minister or senior commanders, veterans and Veer Naris, the widows of soldiers.
In Delhi, leaders and the service chiefs pay homage at the National War Memorial, where the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame from India Gate was merged in January 2022. State capitals, cantonments and schools hold their own wreath-layings, talks by veterans and bike rallies.
What should you write on Kargil Vijay Diwas?
A Kargil Vijay Diwas message should honour the soldiers first and celebrate the result second. The best messages name someone or something specific: a regiment, a peak, a Param Vir Chakra awardee, or a family member who served.
Do
- Name a soldier, a battle or a unit; it makes the message about real people.
- Remember the families, especially the Veer Naris and parents who lost sons.
- Thank veterans and serving personnel you know personally.
Avoid
- Don't use festive wording like "Happy" and "celebrate"; prefer "saluting" and "remembering".
- Avoid taunting another country or its people; the day is about our soldiers.
- Don't share graphic images of casualties or the dead.
Other days that honour the armed forces include Indian Army Day, Indian Air Force Day and Vijay Diwas on 16 December.
How to wish someone on Kargil Vijay Diwas
A good Kargil Vijay Diwas message pairs pride with remembrance. Name the soldiers, the regiments or the peaks if you can, thank serving soldiers and veterans, and remember the families who lost someone. Many people avoid "Happy" because the day honours the dead; "Saluting" or "Remembering" reads better. Keep it respectful and avoid taunts aimed at another country.
