About MSME Day
MSME Day, the UN's day for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, is marked on 27 June. In 2027 it falls on Sunday, 27 June 2027. The UN General Assembly created it in April 2017 through resolution A/RES/71/279. In India the Ministry of MSME marks it as Udyami Bharat, usually with an event at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi where ZED certificates are handed out and new schemes are launched.
MSME Day is the rare international day that matters more to an accountant than to a school. The rules it draws attention to decide whether a welding shop in Rajkot gets paid in 45 days or 145.
What is MSME Day and why is it on 27 June?
MSME Day is the United Nations day for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The General Assembly set 27 June as the date in April 2017 through resolution A/RES/71/279, and the first observance was held on 27 June that year.
The UN's case is simple arithmetic. It says MSMEs are about 90% of all businesses in the world, provide 60 to 70% of jobs, and make up roughly half of global GDP. A day that pushes governments to pay them faster and lend to them cheaper does more for employment than most jobs programmes.
In India the Ministry of MSME marks 27 June as Udyami Bharat, usually at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event is working rather than ceremonial. Past editions have launched the CHAMPIONS portal upgrade, the MSME-TEAM scheme for digital onboarding of small sellers, the Yashasvini campaign for women entrepreneurs, and have transferred PMEGP subsidy money to beneficiaries on stage.
What counts as an MSME in India?
An Indian business is micro, small or medium based on two numbers together: money invested in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. It must stay under both limits to keep a category.
The limits were raised in the 2025-26 Union Budget. Notification S.O. 1364(E) of 21 March 2025 made the new figures effective from 1 April 2025, lifting investment limits 2.5 times and turnover limits 2 times.
| Category | Investment before | Investment now | Turnover before | Turnover now |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹1 crore | ₹2.5 crore | ₹5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹10 crore | ₹25 crore | ₹50 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹50 crore | ₹125 crore | ₹250 crore | ₹500 crore |
Registration happens on the Udyam portal, which replaced Udyog Aadhaar in July 2020. It is free, needs only Aadhaar and the business PAN, and pulls turnover straight from tax filings. A second door, the Udyam Assist Platform, opened in January 2023 for informal micro units that are below the GST threshold and would otherwise be locked out.
What does MSME Day mean for a small business owner in India?
For most owners the day is worth one hour, spent checking whether they are claiming what the law already gives them. Three things are worth a look.
- Udyam registration. If the business is not registered, nothing else on this list applies. Registration on the government portal costs nothing, and paid agent sites are not required.
- Credit guarantee. The Budget 2025-26 raised the guarantee cover for micro and small enterprises from ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore, which is meant to let banks lend without collateral.
- ZED certification. The Zero Defect Zero Effect scheme rates manufacturing units at bronze, silver and gold. Certificates are handed out at the Udyami Bharat event each year.
How can an MSME recover a delayed payment?
This is the part of MSME Day worth knowing by heart. Under section 15 of the MSMED Act, 2006, a buyer must pay a micro or small supplier by the agreed date, and in no case later than 45 days from accepting the goods or service. With no written agreement, the window is 15 days.
- Check you qualifyThe delayed payment provisions cover micro and small enterprises with a valid Udyam registration. Medium enterprises are outside them.
- Count the daysThe clock runs from the day the buyer accepted delivery, not the day you raised the invoice.
- Claim the interestSection 16 makes the buyer liable for compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, calculated monthly, from the day payment was due.
- File on MSME SamadhaanComplaints go online to the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council of the state, which the Act asks to decide within 90 days.
- Mention the tax angleSince April 2024, section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act stops a buyer from deducting the expense until it is actually paid, if payment crosses the MSMED Act limit. A polite reminder about this often works faster than a notice.
What to write on MSME Day
Write to a person, not to a sector. Name the product, the shop or the year they nearly shut down.
Related working days on the Indian calendar: GST Day on 1 July, National Statistics Day on 29 June, and National Handloom Day on 7 August, which covers one of India's largest clusters of tiny enterprises.
How to wish someone on MSME Day
An MSME Day message is for a person who runs or works in a small business, not for a cause. The best ones name the work: the workshop, the batch that shipped on time, the years of surviving on delayed payments. Avoid startup language. Most Indian MSMEs are two-person units and family shops, not funded companies, so keep the tone plain and respectful of the grind.
