About National Girl Child Day

National Girl Child Day, or Rashtriya Balika Diwas, is India's annual day on the rights, health and schooling of girls, started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008. It is observed on 24 January, which in 2027 falls on Sunday, 24 January 2027. Schools, anganwadis and district offices mark it with rallies, pledges and programmes on girls' education and the sex ratio at birth.

National Girl Child Day is a government awareness day, not a festival. It sits in the same week as Republic Day preparations, and in most schools and district offices it looks like a morning assembly, a pledge, a rally, and a poster or essay competition on girls' education.

Why is National Girl Child Day on 24 January?

National Girl Child Day falls on 24 January because the Ministry of Women and Child Development fixed that date when it started the observance in 2008. The ministry's own notes do not spell out a reason. The explanation most often given is that on 24 January 1966 Indira Gandhi was sworn in as India's first woman Prime Minister, and the date is kept as a reminder of what a girl from an Indian home can grow up to do. Treat that as the common reading rather than an official one.

It is a different day from the UN's International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October. The UN day is global and focused on advocacy. The Indian day is tied to Indian laws, schemes and data, which is why government events on 24 January usually quote district sex ratio figures and school enrolment numbers.

What problems does National Girl Child Day try to address?

National Girl Child Day exists because girls in India still face specific, measurable disadvantages: sex-selective abortion, early marriage, dropping out of school, poor nutrition in adolescence and violence. The Press Information Bureau's 2026 note for the day lists these as the focus areas, alongside newer ones such as digital access, STEM careers and mental health.

The sex ratio at birth is the number most people know. Government data cited by PIB shows it rising from about 918 girls per 1,000 boys in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24. That is progress, but the gap between girls and boys at birth has not closed. Schooling numbers have improved too: the gross enrolment ratio for girls in Classes 9 and 10 rose from 75.51 per cent in 2014-15 to 80.2 per cent in 2024-25, and 97.5 per cent of schools now report a girls' toilet, a basic condition for adolescent girls to keep attending.

Which laws and schemes are linked to National Girl Child Day?

The laws and schemes most often discussed on National Girl Child Day cover four things: a girl's birth, her schooling, her safety and her money. This table is a quick reference if you are writing a speech, a school notice or a post.

Law or schemeYearWhat it does
Prohibition of Child Marriage Act2006Replaced the 1929 Sarda Act; lets a person married as a child have the marriage annulled
POCSO Act2012Criminalises sexual offences against anyone under 18, with special courts
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao2015Launched in Haryana to fight sex-selective abortion and keep girls in school; now part of Mission Shakti
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana2015A small-savings account for a girl child, meant for her education and future
Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat2024National campaign to end child marriage by 2030
Scheme for Adolescent GirlsOngoingNutrition, iron-folic acid and schooling support for girls aged 14 to 18 in aspirational and northeastern districts

For older girls, the Department of Science and Technology's Vigyan Jyoti programme and CBSE's Udaan project support girls heading for science and engineering. According to PIB, supernumerary seats have lifted the share of women in IITs and NITs from under 10 per cent to over 20 per cent.

How is National Girl Child Day marked in schools and offices?

Most observances of National Girl Child Day are local. Anganwadis and district women and child development offices hold rallies and signature campaigns under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Schools run essay, drawing and debate competitions, and some honour the girls who topped the board exams.

At work, the day is a chance to do something more useful than a poster. Some ideas that have substance:

  1. Sponsor a school expenseFees, a bicycle, a laptop or exam coaching for a girl you know by name, or through a school you trust.
  2. Open or top up a savings accountA Sukanya Samriddhi account, opened at a post office or bank, builds up over years for her studies.
  3. Invite a woman in your field to speakA short talk to a school's senior girls about what the job is actually like.
  4. Check your own houseWho in your family is expected to stop studying first, eat last or stay home? The day is a good prompt for that talk.

What should you write on National Girl Child Day?

The best National Girl Child Day messages talk to a real girl about her, not about girls in general. Praise what she does and thinks. Skip "a daughter is a blessing" style lines if they come with the idea that she is valued only because of her family.

For your daughter
Happy National Girl Child Day. I love how you ask "why" about everything. Never stop. We'll keep finding answers together.
For a niece in her board-exam year
On Girl Child Day, a reminder from your chachi: your marks don't define you, but your stubbornness to finish what you start will take you far.
For a young sportsperson
Happy National Girl Child Day to the fastest bowler in the colony. Keep practising, and keep taking up space on that ground.
For parents of a newborn girl
Congratulations on your daughter, and happy National Girl Child Day. May she grow up asking for more, and getting it.
For a teacher of girls
Thank you for being the reason so many girls stayed in school past Class 10. Happy National Girl Child Day.
For colleagues
On National Girl Child Day, a small ask: if you can, sponsor one girl's school year. It changes more than you think.

Do

  • Name a specific quality, skill or ambition of the girl you are writing to.
  • Mention education, safety or opportunity if you are writing to a group.
  • Include girls from every background in public messages; the day is not about one community.

Avoid

  • Avoid lines that value girls only as future brides or mothers.
  • Don't share the sex ratio of a particular caste, village or community to shame it.
  • Don't post photos of girls from a charity visit without their and their guardians' permission.

How to wish someone on National Girl Child Day

A good message on National Girl Child Day speaks to a particular girl, or to the people raising and teaching her, and names something real, such as her curiosity, her marks, her game or her plans. Avoid lines that praise daughters only as future wives, mothers or "the pride of the family", and avoid pity. For colleagues and public posts, point to one concrete thing: a scholarship, a school, a law, a girl's right to finish her education.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
