About National Integration Day

National Integration Day is observed in India on 19 November, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It opens Quami Ekta Week, the national integration week that runs to 25 November, with meetings and seminars on secularism, communal harmony and non-violence in government offices, schools and colleges. In 2026 it falls on Thursday, 19 November 2026.

National Integration Day is a working day, not a holiday. In most government offices it shows up as a circular and perhaps a seminar. In schools and colleges it opens a week of debates, poetry and essays on harmony between communities. It is easy to miss, and it is often confused with two other days that have similar names.

Why is National Integration Day on 19 November?

National Integration Day falls on 19 November, the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi, who was born in Allahabad on 19 November 1917 and was Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination on 31 October 1984. The date opens Quami Ekta Week, which the Ministry of Home Affairs asks government offices across the country to observe from 19 to 25 November.

The idea of national integration as a government programme is older than the day. In 1961 Jawaharlal Nehru called a conference on the forces dividing Indians by community, caste, religion and language, and it led to the National Integration Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, which first met in June 1962. The council last met in September 2013.

What is Quami Ekta Week?

Quami Ekta Week, or national integration week, is a seven-day observance from 19 to 25 November in which each day carries its own theme. The Home Ministry lays out the programme, and offices, schools and district administrations organise events under it.

DateDayWhat the Home Ministry suggests
19 NovemberNational Integration DayMeetings, symposia and seminars on secularism, anti-communalism and non-violence
20 NovemberWelfare of Minorities DayHighlighting the Prime Minister's 15 Point Programme for minorities; fraternal processions in towns prone to riots
21 NovemberLinguistic Harmony DayLiterary functions and kavi sammelans so people can enjoy the languages of other regions
22 NovemberWeaker Sections DayMeetings on schemes for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other weaker sections, including land for the landless
23 NovemberCultural Unity DayCultural programmes on India's unity in diversity
24 NovemberWomen's DayThe role of women in society and nation-building
25 NovemberConservation DayAwareness and action to protect the environment

The same week, the National Foundation for Communal Harmony, an autonomous body under the Home Ministry, runs its Communal Harmony Campaign and marks a Flag Day on 25 November or the last working day of the week. Money it raises goes to relief and rehabilitation for children orphaned or left destitute by communal, caste, ethnic or terrorist violence.

How is National Integration Day different from National Unity Day?

National Integration Day and National Unity Day are separate observances on different dates, honouring different leaders. The confusion is understandable, since both use words that translate as "unity" and both are about holding a diverse country together.

31 October is also the anniversary of Indira Gandhi's death, and the Indian National Congress presents its Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration, instituted in 1985, on that day. For the regional 17 September observance, see Hyderabad Liberation Day and its other names. For Patel's day, see National Unity Day.

How can you mark National Integration Day at work or school?

You can mark National Integration Day with something that actually brings people of different backgrounds into the same room, which is harder and more useful than a poster. A few ideas that fit the week's official themes:

  1. Swap a languageOn Linguistic Harmony Day, have colleagues from different states teach everyone one greeting or one short poem in their language.
  2. Share a mealAsk people to bring one dish from home and say where it comes from.
  3. Hold a real conversationA short session where people talk about a time they felt like an outsider, and what helped.
  4. Give to the Flag Day fundContributions to the communal harmony fund support children affected by violence.
  5. Visit a place of another faithWith permission and a guide, a group visit to a gurdwara, church, mosque, temple or monastery.

What should you write on National Integration Day?

A National Integration Day message works best when it talks about real people living together rather than about "unity in diversity" as a slogan. Name the neighbour, the colleague or the language.

For a colleague from another state
On National Integration Day, thank you for teaching me three words of Tamil and the right way to eat a dosa, and for a hundred other small lessons.
For a neighbour of another faith
Happy National Integration Day. Twenty years of sharing Diwali sweets and Eid biryani over the same wall. Here's to twenty more.
For a school group
On National Integration Day, let's learn one new word in a classmate's language and use it all week.
For a team at work
Our team speaks six languages and prays in four ways, and still agrees on chai at four. Happy National Integration Day.
For a friend abroad
Happy National Integration Day from home. Wherever you are, you carry a bit of every Indian state with you.

Do

  • Talk about real neighbours, colleagues and friends, not abstract communities.
  • Keep office messages free of party politics.
  • Include every religion, region, caste and language in public posts.

Avoid

  • Don't use the day to accuse any community of not belonging.
  • Don't mix it up with National Unity Day on 31 October.
  • Don't turn a harmony event into a speech about one leader or one party.

How to wish someone on National Integration Day

A National Integration Day message is about living and working together across religion, caste, language and region. The best ones are concrete: a neighbour of another faith, a colleague from another state, a language you learnt. Keep it free of party politics, even though the day falls on Indira Gandhi's birthday, and avoid lines that treat any community as the "other" to be integrated.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.
