About National Technology Day
National Technology Day is marked in India on 11 May, the anniversary of the Pokhran-II nuclear tests of 1998, and has been observed since 1999. In 2027 it falls on Tuesday, 11 May 2027. The Department of Science and Technology uses the day to honour Indian-made technology, and its Technology Development Board presents the National Technology Awards to companies and start-ups that have taken their own inventions to market.
National Technology Day began as the anniversary of a nuclear test and has turned into India's day for rewarding engineers who take an idea from the lab to the market. Both halves are worth knowing before you write a message.
Why is National Technology Day celebrated on 11 May?
National Technology Day falls on 11 May because on that day in 1998 India carried out three nuclear tests at the Pokhran range in Rajasthan's Thar desert, in the series called Operation Shakti or Pokhran-II. Two more devices were tested on 13 May. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced the tests, and the government later named 11 May National Technology Day. It was first observed in 1999.
Two other achievements are tied to the same date. The Defence Research and Development Organisation test-fired the Trishul short-range surface-to-air missile, and a prototype of the Hansa-3, a two-seat trainer aircraft designed by the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bengaluru, joined the flight test programme.
| What | Who built it | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Pokhran-II nuclear tests (Operation Shakti) | DRDO, the Department of Atomic Energy and BARC | India's first tests since 1974; five devices across 11 and 13 May |
| Trishul missile | DRDO | A short-range surface-to-air missile from India's guided missile programme |
| Hansa-3 trainer aircraft | National Aerospace Laboratories, with Taneja Aerospace | An all-composite two-seat trainer for new pilots, later certified by the DGCA |
Who were the scientists behind Pokhran-II?
Pokhran-II was coordinated by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, then scientific adviser to the defence minister and head of DRDO, and R. Chidambaram, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Anil Kakodkar was director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The Army's 58th Engineer Regiment prepared the test shafts.
The preparations were kept secret from foreign surveillance satellites. Crews worked mostly at night, disguised the shafts as ordinary sand dunes, and scientists travelled in small groups under assumed names. The tests drew sanctions from the United States, Japan and others, and a condemnation from the UN Security Council in Resolution 1172. Pakistan held its own tests within weeks.
That history matters for how you word a message. For many Indians the day is a point of national pride in scientific self-reliance. For others it recalls a nuclear arms race in the region. A technology day message does not need to take a side on that. It can simply thank people who build things.
What are the National Technology Awards?
The main official event on 11 May is the presentation of the National Technology Awards by the Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology. The awards reward commercial success with an Indian-developed technology, not research papers alone.
| Award category | Who it is for | Since |
|---|---|---|
| Successful commercialisation of indigenous technology | An industrial concern that developed and sold an Indian technology | The original award |
| MSME | Micro, small and medium enterprises that commercialised a product based on Indian technology | 2000 |
| Technology start-ups | A start-up with a promising new technology that could be commercialised | 2017 |
The Department of Science and Technology describes the day as a celebration of technologies that suit Indian conditions, are priced competitively and do not cut corners on quality. Each year the day also carries a theme; for 2026 it was "Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth". The DST has used the occasion to launch public projects, such as a science and technology web portal and a Survey of India map-sharing portal in 2018.
How can offices and colleges mark National Technology Day?
National Technology Day is a working day, so it is usually marked with talks, exhibitions and small events rather than ceremonies.
- Engineering colleges hold project exhibitions, hackathons and lectures by alumni working in industry.
- Offices can recognise the people who fixed a system, shipped a product or automated a painful task in the past year. A named thank-you in a team meeting means more than a poster.
- Research labs and incubators often use the day to show visitors their prototypes.
- At home, it is a good moment to tell children the Hansa story: a light aircraft designed in Bengaluru from composite materials to train new pilots.
What to write on National Technology Day
National Technology Day comes ten weeks after National Science Day on 28 February. Engineers' Day on 15 September honours M. Visvesvaraya, and World Telecommunication and Information Society Day follows on 17 May.
How to wish someone on National Technology Day
A good National Technology Day message thanks the people who build things: engineers, lab staff, product teams, founders, technicians. It can mention 1998 and the scientists behind it, but keep the focus on work and skill rather than weapons or rivalry with other countries. Colleagues from any background should be able to read it and nod.

Frequently asked questions
What happened on 11 May 1998?
On 11 May 1998 India tested three nuclear devices at the Pokhran range in Rajasthan, the start of the Pokhran-II series. On the same day DRDO test-fired the Trishul missile and a Hansa-3 prototype trainer aircraft flew as part of its test programme.
When was National Technology Day first observed?
National Technology Day was first observed on 11 May 1999, the first anniversary of the Pokhran-II tests. It has been marked every year since by the Department of Science and Technology.
Who gives the National Technology Awards?
The Technology Development Board, a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, presents the National Technology Awards on 11 May. Categories cover commercialisation of indigenous technology, MSMEs and technology start-ups.
What is the difference between National Technology Day and National Science Day?
National Technology Day, on 11 May, marks the 1998 Pokhran-II tests and honours technology that reaches industry and the market. National Science Day, on 28 February, marks C. V. Raman's 1928 discovery of the Raman effect and focuses on science education.
What was the Hansa-3?
The Hansa-3 is a two-seat, all-composite trainer aircraft designed by the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bengaluru and built with Taneja Aerospace. A Hansa-3 prototype flew on 11 May 1998, and the type received final certification in February 2000.
Can start-ups win a National Technology Award?
Yes. The Technology Development Board added a technology start-up category to the National Technology Awards in 2017, for young companies with a promising new technology that could be commercialised. Applications are invited by the board ahead of 11 May each year.
