About National Youth Day
National Youth Day marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, who was born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta on 12 January 1863. The Government of India declared the day in 1984, and schools, colleges and youth bodies have observed it every year since 1985. In 2027 it falls on Tuesday, 12 January 2027.
Why is National Youth Day celebrated on 12 January?
National Youth Day falls on 12 January because Swami Vivekananda was born on that date in 1863. The Government of India chose his birthday in 1984, saying that his philosophy and the ideals he lived and worked for could inspire Indian youth. The first observance followed in January 1985, and the date has not changed since.
The choice says something about how the state wanted young people to see themselves. Vivekananda was not a politician or a soldier. He was a monk who argued that spiritual strength and practical service belonged together, and who kept telling educated young Indians that their country's poor were their responsibility. That mix of self-belief and duty is what schools and youth bodies still try to draw on each January.
Who was Swami Vivekananda?
Swami Vivekananda was born Narendranath Datta into a Bengali family in Calcutta. His father, Vishwanath Datta, was an attorney, and his mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, was deeply religious. He studied Western philosophy at college while also reading Hindu scripture, and he questioned religious teachers closely before accepting any of them. Around 1881 he met the mystic Sri Ramakrishna at Dakshineswar, and after years of doubt became his leading disciple.

- 4 Jul 1902Dies at Belur Math
He is 39 years old.
At the Chicago Parliament he spoke for a few minutes on the opening day, and his opening words drew about two minutes of applause from an audience of several thousand. He spent the next four years lecturing in the United States and Britain, then came home and set up the Ramakrishna Mission, whose headquarters at Belur Math, on the Hooghly near Howrah, still runs schools, hospitals and disaster relief.
Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth.
His most quoted line, "Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached", is his own adaptation of a verse in the Katha Upanishad (1.3.14), where Yama tells the boy Nachiketa to rise, wake and learn from the wise. It is fine to quote it on a card, but many lines shared online under his name on 12 January are not his. If a quote sounds like a modern motivational poster, check it before you send it.
How is National Youth Day observed in India?
National Youth Day is observed mainly in schools, colleges and youth organisations rather than as a public holiday. Offices and banks stay open. The common forms are morning assemblies about Vivekananda's life, essay and speech contests, debates, yoga sessions, sports meets and blood donation camps run by National Service Scheme (NSS) units and local clubs.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports ties its biggest youth event to the day. For years that was the National Youth Festival. It has since been restructured as the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue. The 2026 edition ran from 9 to 12 January at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with about 3,000 young people selected through a national quiz, essays and state-level rounds, and it closed on National Youth Day with the Prime Minister in attendance.
Ramakrishna Math and Mission centres mark Vivekananda's birthday with a traditional programme: mangal arati before dawn, Vedic chanting, special worship, a homa, readings, devotional music and an evening arati. Belur Math follows the Bengali almanac for this, so its celebration moves each year. In 2026 it fell on 10 January, two days before National Youth Day.
Which dates mark Swami Vivekananda and youth?
Three different dates get mixed up in January and August wishes. The table sorts them out.
| Day | Date | Who marks it | What it is about |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Youth Day | 12 January, fixed | Government of India, schools, colleges | Vivekananda's birthday by the Gregorian calendar, declared in 1984 |
| Vivekananda Jayanti (tithi) | Pausha Krishna Saptami, moves each year | Belur Math, Ramakrishna centres, many Bengali homes | His birth by the Hindu lunar calendar; usually falls in January |
| International Youth Day | 12 August, fixed | United Nations | Endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1999; a new theme each year |
If you are sending a wish in August, International Youth Day is the right occasion. On 12 January, both "Happy National Youth Day" and "Vivekananda Jayanti" are correct.
What to write on National Youth Day
A National Youth Day message lands best when it treats the young person as capable, not as a project. Point to something specific they are doing. If you use a Vivekananda line, keep it to one and make sure it is really his.
Do
- Name one real quality or effort in the person you are writing to.
- Check a quote against a reliable collection before putting it on a card.
- Remember that Vivekananda is a religious teacher to many; write about him with respect.
Avoid
- Don't lecture a young person about their phone or their generation in a greeting.
- Avoid using the day to push a party or ideology; the day belongs to all young Indians.
- Don't confuse 12 January with International Youth Day on 12 August.
For other January dates, including Makar Sankranti and Republic Day, see the 2027 calendar.
How to wish someone on National Youth Day
A good National Youth Day wish speaks to a young person's effort and character, not just their age. Name something they are working towards, such as an exam, a first job or a cause, and quote Vivekananda sparingly and accurately. For teachers, coaches and mentors, thank them for backing young people. Keep it encouraging, not preachy.
