About United Nations Day

United Nations Day is marked on 24 October, the date in 1945 when the UN Charter came into force after enough countries had ratified it. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, 24 October 2026. The General Assembly named the day in 1947 and, in 1971, asked member states to treat it as a public holiday. Schools, UN offices and model UN clubs mark it with flag ceremonies, debates and food fairs.

India's signature is on the United Nations Charter, and India was not a free country when it signed. That one fact explains more about how India argues at the UN than any speech since.

Why is United Nations Day on 24 October?

United Nations Day is on 24 October because the UN Charter came into force on that date in 1945. The Charter had been signed in San Francisco on 26 June 1945 by 50 countries, but it only took effect once a majority had ratified it at home, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.

The General Assembly named 24 October as United Nations Day in 1947, through resolution 168(II), and asked that the day be used to tell people what the organisation is for. In 1971 the Assembly went further with resolution 2782(XXVI) and recommended that member states observe it as a public holiday. Most countries, India included, never did.

What does the United Nations actually do?

The UN Charter sets out six principal organs, and most confusion about the UN comes from mixing them up. The General Assembly is where all 193 members get one vote each and its resolutions are recommendations. The Security Council is the only body whose decisions bind members, and five of its fifteen seats are permanent with a veto.

OrganWhat it doesWhere it sits
General AssemblyDebate and recommendations; every member has one voteNew York
Security CouncilBinding decisions on peace and security; 5 permanent members hold a vetoNew York
Economic and Social CouncilCoordinates work on development, health, labour and human rightsNew York
International Court of JusticeSettles legal disputes between states and gives advisory opinionsThe Hague
SecretariatThe staff, led by the Secretary-General, who run daily operationsNew York

Below these sit the agencies most people have actually heard of: WHO, UNICEF, UNESCO, ILO, FAO. Around 26 UN organisations work in India, under a five-year plan with the government called the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

What is India's role in the United Nations?

India is a founding member. The delegation led by Sir Arcot Ramaswami Mudaliar signed the Charter on 26 June 1945, at a point when India was still under British rule. Four founding members were not independent when they joined, and India was one of them.

India used the new body early. In 1946 it raised the treatment of Indians in South Africa at the General Assembly, the first country to bring racial discrimination there before the UN.

The larger Indian contribution since has been soldiers. India has taken part in close to 50 peacekeeping missions and sent more than two lakh troops. More than 160 Indian peacekeepers have died on UN duty. In 2007 India sent the first all-women Formed Police Unit in UN history, to Liberia, and several countries copied the idea afterwards.

India has served eight terms as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, sixteen years in all, and continues to press for a permanent seat alongside Brazil, Germany and Japan.

How is United Nations Day marked in India?

It is a normal working day. Banks, offices and government departments stay open, and there is no national event.

Where the day shows up is in education. Schools that run Model UN clubs hold mock assemblies. International schools often do a flag parade and a food fair with dishes from different countries. Colleges hold debates on Security Council reform. UN offices in India and the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi run talks and exhibitions, and the UN concert in New York is streamed.

A few ideas that beat a poster:

  • Read the Preamble to the UN Charter aloud in class. It is short, and the phrase about saving succeeding generations from the scourge of war was written by people who had just lived through two.
  • Have students argue a real Security Council case from both sides, including the veto.
  • If someone in your family or neighbourhood served as a peacekeeper, ask them where they were posted and what the job was actually like.

What to write on United Nations Day

For a student in a Model UN club
Happy UN Day. You argue for countries you have never visited and you do it well. Keep going, and read the Charter once outside the competition.
For a civics or history teacher
On United Nations Day, thank you for teaching this properly, veto and all, instead of as a poster about world peace.
For a colleague at a UN agency or NGO
Happy UN Day. The reports are long and the change is slow, and you still show up. Thank you for the work.
For an ex-peacekeeper or their family
On United Nations Day, remembering the months you spent under a blue flag far from home. Thank you for that service.
For a friend abroad
Happy United Nations Day. Fifty countries signed in 1945 and there are 193 now. Ours were both in the room that first day, in different ways.
For a school group
Happy UN Day to Class 8. Today, one country each, one fact each, and no repeating France.

How to wish someone on United Nations Day

United Nations Day is a civic and educational day, not a festive one. Messages work best when they are specific: to a student in a model UN club, to a teacher of civics, to someone who has served as a peacekeeper or worked for a UN agency. Keep the tone level. Grand claims about world peace read as empty, and people who work in the system are usually the first to say so.
