About World Day of Social Justice

World Day of Social Justice is a United Nations day about fair work, an end to poverty and the inclusion of people who get left out. It is held every 20 February, and in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027. The International Labour Organization leads the global observance; in India it is marked mainly by unions, colleges and civil society groups.

What is World Day of Social Justice?

World Day of Social Justice is a United Nations observance held every 20 February, and in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027. The General Assembly created it by resolution 62/10 on 26 November 2007, and the first one was held in 2009.

The day is built around three plain goals: end poverty, give everyone decent work that pays and protects them, and make sure people who are usually left out get a place. The International Labour Organization leads it. Six months after the UN created the day, the ILO adopted its Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization on 10 June 2008, agreed by governments, employers and unions from 182 member states. Since November 2023 the ILO has also run a Global Coalition for Social Justice, open to governments, companies, unions, NGOs and universities that agree to push for it.

Why 20 February, and what does the day actually ask for?

The UN picked 20 February with no historical anniversary attached. Unlike most observances, this one commemorates nothing. It was set aside to give the social development agenda a fixed date on the calendar.

What it asks for is specific. Not charity, but rules: a wage you can live on, a workplace that does not injure you, a pension, the right to join a union, and an end to being shut out of work because of your caste, gender, disability or religion.

What does social justice mean in India?

In India the phrase starts with the Constitution. The Preamble, adopted on 26 November 1949, names justice before liberty and equality.

JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity

Preamble to the Constitution of India

The practical version sits in schemes and laws, and the numbers are large because the country is large.

What the UN day coversWhere India's version of it sits
Ending poverty and hungerThe National Food Security Act, 2013 covers about 81.35 crore people. Since January 2023 they get their ration grain free rather than at a subsidised price.
Decent worke-Shram, the Labour Ministry's database of unorganised workers, had crossed 30 crore registrations by March 2025, and more than half the names on it were women.
Ending child labourIndia ratified the two main ILO conventions on child labour on 13 June 2017, and since 2016 the law bars anyone under 14 from working at all.
Social inclusionReservation in education, government jobs and legislatures for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, and a Union ministry, Social Justice and Empowerment, that exists for the purpose.

The gap between the paper and the life is the argument that runs through every Indian discussion of this day. A worker can be on the e-Shram list and still have no written contract, no paid leave and no way to prove who employed him.

How is World Day of Social Justice observed in India?

There is no official Indian programme for 20 February, no flag, no pledge and no holiday. Offices work as usual.

What you will see is smaller and local. Trade union federations issue statements. Law colleges hold moots and legal aid camps. Social work departments run seminars, and NGOs working on labour, caste discrimination or disability use the date to release reports. Some companies fold it into their diversity calendar with a panel discussion. If you want to mark it at work, a 20-minute talk by someone who actually does the work, a labour lawyer or a district legal services officer, will be worth more than a poster.

What to write on World Day of Social Justice

Avoid the word "celebrate". Nobody celebrates the absence of justice. Write to thank, to inform, or to commit to one small thing.

Do

  • Name one concrete issue: wages, safety, caste at work, disabled access, migrant labour.
  • Thank a specific person doing the work rather than praising justice in the abstract.
  • If you post at work, add something your organisation is actually doing, with a date.

Avoid

  • Do not write "Happy World Day of Social Justice". It sits badly.
  • Avoid quoting famous leaders without saying anything of your own.
  • Do not turn a colleague's caste, disability or religion into a talking point without asking.
For a colleague or team
On World Day of Social Justice, one thought worth sitting with: about 30 crore Indians work outside any formal contract. If our processes touch any of them, that is where to start.
For a teacher to a class
Today is the UN's World Day of Social Justice. Our Constitution puts justice first in the Preamble, before liberty and equality. Ask yourself what that ordering was meant to fix.
For a friend in social work or law
You spend your days on the part of this work that nobody posts about. On World Day of Social Justice, just saying that I see it.
For a union or workers' group
Twenty February is World Day of Social Justice. Same demands as every other day: a living wage, a safe site, and a contract in writing. Solidarity.
For a community or NGO group
Marking World Day of Social Justice by doing one useful thing: helping five people in our area get their e-Shram registration done. Join us if you can.
For a student group
World Day of Social Justice was set by the UN in 2007. No anniversary, no hero, just a date to check whether the law is reaching people. Our legal aid cell is open all day.

How to wish someone on World Day of Social Justice

A good message on this day names something concrete rather than praising the idea of justice. Thank the people who do the unglamorous work, a union organiser, a legal aid lawyer, an Anganwadi worker, a teacher in a government school. Or state one fact about unequal pay, informal work or caste that your reader may not know. Keep it sober; this is not a festival greeting.

Frequently asked questions

When is World Day of Social Justice in 2027?

World Day of Social Justice 2027 falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027.

Why is World Day of Social Justice observed on 20 February?

The UN General Assembly chose 20 February by resolution 62/10 on 26 November 2007, and the first observance was in 2009. The date marks no historical event; it was set aside simply to keep social development on the international calendar.

What is the theme of World Day of Social Justice?

The United Nations and the International Labour Organization set a fresh theme every year, so it changes each February. Recent themes have centred on decent work, bridging gaps in social protection and renewing commitment to social development. The current theme is published on the UN observance page a few weeks before the day.

How can a school or office mark World Day of Social Justice?

Hold something short and real: a talk by a labour lawyer or legal services officer, a legal aid or document camp for support staff, or a session where the organisation states one measurable thing it will change. Posters and quotes alone do not achieve much.

What is the difference between social justice and equality?

Equality means treating people the same. Social justice means fixing the conditions that make the same treatment unfair, such as unequal schooling, caste discrimination in hiring, or work with no contract. The UN day frames it as poverty eradication, decent work and social inclusion.

What should I write in a World Day of Social Justice message?

Skip the word "happy". Write one concrete thing instead: thank someone who works on wages, legal aid or disability access, or share a single fact your reader may not know, such as the share of Indian workers with no written contract.
