About World Humanitarian Day

World Humanitarian Day is marked on 19 August, the day a bomb hit the UN office at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad in 2003 and killed 22 aid workers. The UN General Assembly created the day in 2008 to honour people who work in disasters and conflicts, and to press for their safety. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, 19 August 2027.

Why is World Humanitarian Day on 19 August?

Because of one afternoon in Baghdad. On 19 August 2003 a truck bomb struck the Canal Hotel, which the United Nations was using as its headquarters in Iraq. It killed 22 people and wounded more than 100. Among the dead was Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, who had spent 34 years with the organisation, starting with refugee work in Bangladesh in 1971. The UN mission he led had been set up five days earlier.

Five years later, in 2008, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 63/139 and named 19 August World Humanitarian Day. It was first observed in 2009.

The day does two things at once. It thanks people who deliver food, medicine and shelter in the worst places, and it argues that attacking them is a crime, not a side effect of war.

Who are humanitarian workers, and how dangerous is the job?

Most are local. They are nurses, drivers, logistics staff, water engineers, teachers and community health workers employed in their own country, not expatriates flown in. That is the single fact most often missed on 19 August.

The Aid Worker Security Database, which the UN cites each year on this day, recorded 383 aid workers killed in 2024, up from 293 in 2023. UN officials said most of those killed were national staff, attacked while working or at home.

How does this day connect to India?

India shows up on both sides of the ledger: as a country that responds at home and abroad, and as a country that supplies a lot of the world's relief staff.

At home, the main responders are the National Disaster Response Force, state disaster response forces, the armed forces, and the Indian Red Cross Society with its 36 state and union territory branches. Indian relief work usually means cyclone evacuation on the Odisha and Andhra coasts, floods in Assam, Bihar and Kerala, and earthquakes in the Himalayan belt.

Abroad, India has run named relief missions. After the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria on 6 February 2023, India sent NDRF search and rescue teams, army medical teams and a field hospital under the name Operation Dost, dost being the word for friend in Turkish and in several Indian languages.

Who responds in IndiaWhat they do
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)Search and rescue after earthquakes, building collapses, floods and cyclones. Also deployed abroad.
State disaster response forces and district administrationsEvacuation, relief camps, food and water in the first days.
Indian Red Cross Society branchesBlood, first aid, family tracing, relief material through district branches.
Armed forces and Coast GuardAirlift, boats, bridging, medical camps when civil capacity is stretched.
Local NGOs and faith-based kitchensCooked meals, shelter and clothing, often on the ground before anyone else.

Who else is remembered on 19 August in India?

Two other observances share the date, which is worth knowing before you post. 19 August is Sadbhavana Diwas, marked in India as a day for communal harmony on Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, and it is also World Photography Day. If you are writing an office message, say which one you mean.

What to write on World Humanitarian Day

Write to a person who does the work. Thanks that names a specific job beats a general tribute.

Do

  • Name the work and the place: the relief camp in Barpeta, the ambulance shift, the cold chain for vaccines.
  • Thank local staff, not only international agencies.
  • If you want to help, give to an organisation already working in the area rather than sending clothes and parcels.

Avoid

  • Don't write "Happy World Humanitarian Day".
  • Don't call aid workers heroes and leave it there. They are asking for safety and funding, not praise.
  • Don't post photographs of victims or of injured staff.
For a colleague in relief work
On World Humanitarian Day, thinking of your team and the weeks you spent in the flood camps. Thank you for doing the part nobody films.
For a friend posted in a conflict zone
19 August today. Stay safe, call your mother, and come home in one piece. We are proud of you here.
For a doctor or nurse in a disaster team
You were on a boat in Kerala and at a camp in Assam this year. Thank you. Take the leave you have saved up.
For an office post
Today is World Humanitarian Day, marking the 2003 Baghdad attack that killed 22 aid workers. Most relief staff are local people helping their own neighbourhoods. Our giving page lists three verified organisations.
For a team that lost a colleague
We are thinking of all of you today, and of your colleague by name. She is remembered here, and so is the work she left finished.
For a volunteer group
To everyone who packed kits, drove trucks and manned helplines this year: the unglamorous part is the part that saves people. Thank you.

How to wish someone on World Humanitarian Day

This is a day of thanks and mourning, not celebration, so skip "Happy World Humanitarian Day". A message that works names the work: a flood relief camp, a vaccination drive, a night shift in an ambulance. If you are writing to someone who has lost a colleague in the field, keep it short, say the colleague's name, and do not ask for stories.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

When is World Humanitarian Day in 2027?

World Humanitarian Day 2027 falls on Thursday, 19 August 2027.

Why is World Humanitarian Day observed on 19 August?

It marks the bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad on 19 August 2003, which killed 22 aid workers, including the UN's Special Representative for Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello. The UN General Assembly created the day in 2008 and it was first observed in 2009.

Who was Sérgio Vieira de Mello?

He was a Brazilian who spent 34 years with the United Nations, from refugee work in Bangladesh in 1971 to mine clearance in Cambodia and the transitional administration that led East Timor to independence. He was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights when he took the Iraq posting, and he was killed in the Baghdad attack of 19 August 2003 at the age of 55.

How many aid workers are killed each year?

The Aid Worker Security Database recorded 383 aid workers killed in 2024, compared with 293 in 2023. UN officials note that most of those killed are national staff working in their own communities rather than international personnel.

Is World Humanitarian Day a holiday in India?

No. It is an observance with no holiday attached. In India, 19 August is better known as Sadbhavana Diwas, the day for communal harmony marked on Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary.

How can I mark World Humanitarian Day in a useful way?

Give money rather than goods to an organisation already working in the affected area, since cash lets them buy locally and quickly. If you have a professional skill such as medicine, logistics or law, offer it to a relief group before a disaster happens, not during one.
