About World Music Day
World Music Day, known in France as the Fête de la Musique, is observed on 21 June with free public music of every kind. It began in Paris on 21 June 1982, created by culture minister Jack Lang and music director Maurice Fleuret, and is now marked in more than 120 countries. In 2027 it falls on Monday, 21 June 2027. It is not a United Nations day and not a holiday in India.
World Music Day was invented to get music out of concert halls and onto the street, for free, on the longest day of the year. That idea travels well to India, where a lot of the best music already happens on temple steps, in wedding processions and in a neighbour's practice room at six in the morning.
What is World Music Day and how did it start?
World Music Day is the international name for the Fête de la Musique, first held in Paris on 21 June 1982. France's culture minister Jack Lang, his music and dance director Maurice Fleuret and the scenographer Christian Dupavillon built it around one finding: a 1982 survey of French cultural habits showed five million people, about one young person in two, played an instrument, while organised concerts reached only a few.
Their answer was music everywhere and concerts nowhere. Performances would be free, open to anyone who wanted to play, and open to every genre with no ranking between them. The date is the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. The idea spread through Europe from 1985, was formalised by a charter signed in Budapest in 1997, and by 2017 was marked in more than 120 countries.
How is World Music Day marked in India?
Indian cities mark it mostly through music schools, cafés, cultural centres and the Alliance Française network, with open mics, free gigs, busking and student showcases. Because 21 June is also the International Day of Yoga, a widely observed day in India with official events from early morning, music programmes usually run in the evening.
India's own musical calendar is bigger than this one day. Chennai's Music Season, which UNESCO describes as a two-month festival with around 1,500 performances across the city, runs from roughly mid-December. It traces back to a music conference held in December 1927. Three Indian cities are in UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for music: Varanasi joined in 2015, Chennai in 2017 and Gwalior, the home of the Gwalior gharana and the city associated with Tansen, in 2023.
The national body for music is the Sangeet Natak Akademi, set up on 31 May 1952 and inaugurated on 28 January 1953. It gives annual awards in Hindustani and Carnatic music, folk and tribal music, and it documents forms that have few performers left.
What is the difference between Hindustani and Carnatic music?
Both are Indian classical systems built on raga, a melodic framework, and tala, a rhythmic cycle. They split in practice several centuries ago and differ in repertoire, instruments and performance style.
| Hindustani | Carnatic | |
|---|---|---|
| Mainly found in | North, west and east India, and Pakistan | Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala |
| Built around | Long improvised development of one raga | Composed pieces, or kritis, with improvisation around them |
| Key composers | Tansen, Amir Khusrau, Sadarang | The trinity: Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri |
| Typical instruments | Sitar, sarod, sarangi, bansuri, tabla | Veena, violin, nadaswaram, mridangam, ghatam |
| Teaching lines | Gharanas, such as Gwalior, Kirana, Jaipur-Atrauli | Bani or sampradaya, traced through a teacher's lineage |
| Season to watch | Winter festivals such as Sawai Gandharva in Pune and Dover Lane in Kolkata | Margazhi, the Chennai Music Season, from mid-December |
Beyond the classical systems sit film music, which is most Indians' daily listening, and a long list of folk traditions: Baul in Bengal, Sufi qawwali in Delhi and Ajmer, Manganiar and Langa music in Rajasthan, Lavani in Maharashtra, Bihu songs in Assam and Sopana in Kerala.
Do
- Pay for the music you love, through a ticket, a subscription or a direct transfer to an independent artist.
- Credit the musicians by name when you post a clip, including the accompanists.
- If you go to a classical concert, stay for the full piece; walking out mid-raga is the one thing regulars mind.
- Ask before recording at a small venue or a temple performance.
Avoid
- Don't use a musician friend's work as free background for your reel without asking.
- Avoid requesting a full performance at a family function without discussing a fee.
- Don't confuse World Music Day with "world music" as a record-shop genre; the day covers every kind of music equally.
What to write on World Music Day
If you are marking the performing arts through the year, International Dance Day on 29 April and World Theatre Day on 27 March pair with this one.
How to wish someone on World Music Day
A good World Music Day message carries a song, not a slogan. Send the track you associate with that person and say where you first heard it together. For someone who plays or teaches, acknowledge the practice hours rather than the talent. For a friend who sings only in the car, say so warmly. Avoid lines about music being a universal language; a specific song says more.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Frequently asked questions
When is World Music Day in 2027?
World Music Day 2027 falls on Monday, 21 June 2027.
Why is World Music Day on 21 June?
World Music Day falls on 21 June because it began as France's Fête de la Musique, first held on 21 June 1982, the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. The long evening allowed free street performances to run late.
Who started World Music Day?
The Fête de la Musique was created in France by culture minister Jack Lang, his director of music and dance Maurice Fleuret and the scenographer Christian Dupavillon, and first held in Paris on 21 June 1982. The idea spread through Europe from 1985 and is now marked in more than 120 countries.
Is World Music Day a UN observance?
No. World Music Day is not a United Nations day and has no official UN theme. It began as a French government cultural initiative and spread through cities and cultural organisations, so events are organised locally with no central authority.
Is World Music Day the same as Make Music Day?
Yes, largely. Fête de la Musique, World Music Day and Make Music Day all refer to the same 21 June event, with the name varying by country. The core rules are the same everywhere: free to attend, open to amateurs and professionals, and no ranking between genres.
How can you mark World Music Day in India without an event?
Learn one piece you have been putting off, take a beginner's class, or buy an album directly from an independent Indian artist instead of streaming it. Sending one specific song to one person, with a line about why, does more than a group forward.
