About World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is observed on 8 June, and in 2027 it falls on Tuesday, 8 June 2027. The idea came out of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio and the UN General Assembly made it official from 2009 onwards. India marks it along nine coastal states and four union territories, with beach clean-ups, port and navy events and school programmes.

India's coastline got longer in 2024 without an inch of new land. A remeasurement using high-resolution navigation charts put it at 11,098.81 km, against the 7,516.6 km that had been in official use since the 1970s. Nothing changed except the scale of the map; a finer line follows every creek and inlet. It is a good reminder that most numbers about the sea are a choice about how closely you look.

What is World Oceans Day and why 8 June?

World Oceans Day is a UN observance held on 8 June. The proposal is credited to Canada at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and ocean groups marked the date unofficially for years. The UN General Assembly designated it formally in 2008, with official observance from 2009.

The UN's own summary of why it matters: the ocean covers more than 70 per cent of the surface of the earth, produces at least half the oxygen, absorbs roughly 30 per cent of the carbon dioxide people release, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people. The theme for the 2026 observance was "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean".

What does the sea mean for India?

Nine states and four union territories have a coast, from Gujarat round to West Bengal, plus the Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar islands. India's exclusive economic zone, the area where it controls fishing and seabed resources, runs to roughly two million square kilometres.

Andaman and NicobarUnion territoryThe country's richest reefs and the Nicobar megapode, found nowhere else

India's mangrove cover stood at 4,991.68 sq km in the India State of Forest Report 2023. The MISHTI scheme, announced in the 2023 budget, funds mangrove planting along the coast of eleven states and two union territories. Mangroves do a dull, valuable job: they slow a storm surge and hold a shoreline together.

The deep sea is a newer interest. The Deep Ocean Mission, approved in 2021 with an outlay of about ₹4,077 crore, includes Samudrayaan, which aims to send three people to a depth of 6,000 metres in an Indian-built submersible called Matsya 6000.

What to do on World Oceans Day, if you are not on the coast

Most plastic in the sea arrives down rivers, so an inland city is part of the problem whether or not anyone there has seen a beach. The practical version of this day is about what leaves your house.

  • Find out where your ward's waste actually goes. Most municipal waste that reaches a drain ends in a river.
  • Cut the packaging you cannot avoid before it arrives, not after: bulk buying, refill shops, saying no to the extra carry bag.
  • If you are on the coast, join a scheduled clean-up run by a group that weighs and records what it collects. The data matters more than the photograph.
  • Eat fish in season and ask what it is. Fish markets along both coasts have local names and local seasons, and demand for one species out of season pushes fishing into breeding months.

What to write on World Oceans Day

For a friend who lives by the sea
Happy World Oceans Day. Save me a spot at the fish market and tell me what's in season.
For someone in the navy, coast guard or merchant navy
On World Oceans Day, thinking of the months you spend out there. Fair weather and a short passage home.
For a fisher family
Wishing you a safe season and a full boat this World Oceans Day. May the weather warnings be wrong in the right direction.
For a colleague
Happy World Oceans Day. We're 800 km inland and our plastic still gets there. Shall we fix the pantry first?
For a marine biologist friend
Happy Oceans Day. Here's to the dives, the seasickness and the fact that nobody funds sea cucumbers.
For a child
Happy World Oceans Day. Every drain on our street ends up in a river, and every river ends up in the sea. So the sea starts here.

How to wish someone on World Oceans Day

For the millions of Indians who fish for a living, the sea is work, not scenery. A message that treats it as a holiday backdrop can miss badly. Mention a real coast, a boat, a catch or a clean-up. For a fisher family, a wish for a safe season and a good catch is worth more than anything about conservation.

Frequently asked questions

When is World Oceans Day in 2027?

World Oceans Day 2027 falls on Tuesday, 8 June 2027.

Why is World Oceans Day on 8 June?

The date was proposed by Canada at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and observed unofficially by ocean organisations for years. The UN General Assembly formally designated 8 June as World Oceans Day in 2008, with official observance beginning in 2009.

How long is India's coastline?

India's coastline was remeasured in 2023-24 and now stands at 11,098.81 km, replacing the figure of 7,516.6 km used since the 1970s. The change came from mapping at a much finer scale, which picks up creeks, inlets and small islands, not from any gain of land.

Is it World Oceans Day or World Ocean Day?

The United Nations uses World Oceans Day, with the plural, and that is the official name. Some organisations write World Ocean Day in the singular to stress that the world's seas form one connected body of water. Both refer to the same day, 8 June.

Where do olive ridley turtles nest in India?

The main mass nesting beaches are in Odisha: Gahirmatha in Kendrapara district, the Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam, and the Devi river mouth. Nearly 7 lakh turtles nested at Rushikulya in 2025, one of the largest counts recorded there.

How much mangrove forest does India have?

India had 4,991.68 sq km of mangrove cover according to the India State of Forest Report 2023. The largest single block is the Sundarban in West Bengal at about 2,118 sq km, followed by stretches in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

What is the Deep Ocean Mission?

The Deep Ocean Mission is an Indian government programme approved in 2021 with an outlay of around ₹4,077 crore, covering deep-sea mineral exploration, ocean climate studies and marine biology. Its best-known part is Samudrayaan, which plans to carry three people to 6,000 metres in the indigenous submersible Matsya 6000.
