About Army Day
Army Day, or Thal Sena Diwas, marks 15 January 1949, when Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa took over from General Sir Francis Roy Bucher as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. In 2027 it falls on Friday, 15 January 2027. It is a working day for most of India, marked by a parade, gallantry awards and wreath-laying at army stations across the country.
Army Day is not a war anniversary. It remembers a handover. On 15 January 1949, seventeen months after independence, the Indian Army was placed under an Indian commander for the first time, and the date has been kept every year since.
Why is Army Day celebrated on 15 January?
Army Day is held on 15 January because on that date in 1949 Lieutenant General Kodandera Madappa Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British officer to hold the post. Until then, independent India's army was still led by a British Commander-in-Chief.
Cariappa was born on 28 January 1899 in Kodagu, in present-day Karnataka, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 1 December 1919. He was the first Indian to attend the Staff College at Quetta, the first to command a battalion, in 1942, and led Indian forces on the western front in the 1947 war with Pakistan. The wife of a British officer, who found his name hard to say, called him "Kipper", and the nickname stayed.
- 1 Dec 1919Commissioned
Cariappa becomes a second lieutenant in the Indian Army.
- 1942First Indian battalion commander
He takes command of an infantry battalion, a post held until then only by British officers.
- 15 Jan 1949Takes over the Army
Cariappa succeeds General Sir Francis Roy Bucher as Commander-in-Chief. The date becomes Army Day.
- 14 Jan 1953Retires
He hangs up his uniform after four years in command. This date is now kept as Armed Forces Veterans' Day.
- 15 Jan 1986Field Marshal
He is given the five-star rank, one of only two Indian Army officers to hold it, the other being Sam Manekshaw.
The day before Army Day matters too. Since 2017 the Ministry of Defence has marked 14 January as Armed Forces Veterans' Day, the anniversary of Cariappa's retirement, and all three services use it to honour those who have left uniform. If you have a veteran in the family, 14 January is arguably the better day to call.
Where is the Army Day parade held?
The main Army Day parade was held for decades at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. Since 2023 it has moved each year to a different city, usually one with a large army headquarters, so that people outside the capital can watch it.
| Year | City | What was different |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Bengaluru | First Army Day parade held outside Delhi |
| 2024 | Lucknow | Second city in the rotation |
| 2025 | Pune | Southern Command headquarters; a women Agniveer contingent marched |
| 2026 | Jaipur | First parade held on a public road, Mahal Road, rather than inside a cantonment |
The 2026 parade in Jaipur drew a crowd that the Army put at over 1.5 lakh. Along with marching contingents it showed tanks, artillery, missile systems, drones and robotic dogs, the Nepal Army band joined in, and Rajasthani Kalbelia and Gair dancers performed between contingents. The Chief of the Army Staff reviews the parade and presents gallantry awards and Sena Medals, some of them posthumously to families, which is the moment most soldiers remember.
Army headquarters and stations elsewhere hold their own ceremonies, usually beginning with a wreath at the local war memorial for soldiers who died in service.
How can civilians and schools mark Army Day?
For most people Army Day is an ordinary working day, and the useful things to do are small.
- Schools and NCC units often invite a serving officer or veteran to speak, or have students write letters to soldiers posted in remote areas.
- Cantonments sometimes open "Know Your Army" exhibitions to the public in the week before the parade, where children can see equipment up close.
- Families of serving soldiers are often apart on the day. A call to the spouse or parents at home is worth more than a public post.
- If you want to give money, the formal route is the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, collected around Armed Forces Flag Day on 7 December, which supports ex-servicemen, widows and dependants.
Do
- Name the person and the service: the regiment, the posting, the years.
- Remember veterans and the families of those who died in service, not only those in uniform today.
- Keep workplace wishes short and neutral; colleagues of every background have family in the forces.
Avoid
- Don't ask a serving soldier about operations, locations or casualties. They can't answer and it puts them on the spot.
- Avoid messages that insult another country; the Army's own messaging on the day is about service, not rivalry.
- Don't share parade photos of soldiers' faces with invented captions or unverified "heroic" stories.
What to write on Army Day
The best Army Day messages are specific and a little understated, in the way soldiers themselves talk about their work. Mention a place, a posting, a sacrifice the family made.
The Army has its own day, and so do the other services: Indian Air Force Day on 8 October and Indian Navy Day on 4 December. Kargil Vijay Diwas in July remembers the 1999 war specifically.
How to wish someone on Army Day
A good Army Day message thanks a specific person for a specific thing: the years a parent spent on postings, a friend's first year after commissioning, a veteran's service. Keep it plain and sincere. Pride is fine; chest-thumping about enemies is not. For a family that has lost someone in service, remember the person by name rather than sending a festive "Happy Army Day".

Frequently asked questions
When is Army Day in 2027?
Army Day 2027 falls on Friday, 15 January 2027.
Who was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army?
Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on 15 January 1949, taking over from General Sir Francis Roy Bucher. He served until January 1953 and was made a Field Marshal in 1986.
What is the difference between Army Day and Armed Forces Veterans' Day?
Army Day, on 15 January, marks Cariappa taking command of the Indian Army in 1949. Armed Forces Veterans' Day, on 14 January, marks his retirement in 1953 and has been kept by all three services since 2017 to honour former service members.
Why is the Army Day parade not held in Delhi any more?
Since 2023 the Army has rotated the main Army Day parade between cities so that more people can see it. It was held in Bengaluru in 2023, Lucknow in 2024, Pune in 2025 and Jaipur in 2026, where it moved out of the cantonment onto a city road for the first time.
What are Army Day, Navy Day and Air Force Day?
Each service has its own day. Army Day is 15 January, Indian Air Force Day is 8 October and Indian Navy Day is 4 December, and each marks a different event in that service's history.
What should you not say to a soldier on Army Day?
Avoid asking about operations, deployments or casualties, which soldiers cannot discuss. A simple thank-you that mentions their service, their family or their posting is better than a patriotic slogan.
