About Kiss Day
Kiss Day is the seventh day of Valentine's Week in India, and in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 13 February 2027, the day before Valentine's Day. Couples and married partners mark it with small, private gestures of affection: a forehead kiss, a blown kiss on a video call, or a card signed with a kiss.
Where Kiss Day comes from
Kiss Day sits on 13 February every year, between Hug Day on the 12th and Valentine's Day on the 14th. It is the seventh of the eight days of Valentine's Week, which starts with Rose Day on 7 February. Only the weekday changes from year to year.
Nobody founded it. There is no documented first Kiss Day and no old custom behind it. Valentine's Day itself only caught on in India around 1992, after economic liberalisation, carried by music television, radio shows, love-letter contests and a booming card trade. The themed days from the 7th to the 13th grew after that, from roughly the late 1990s and 2000s, through gift shops, FM radio, TV and then social media.
Kiss Day is not a minor stop in that week. People search for it about as often as Propose Day, mostly to check the date ("kiss day kab hai") and to find wishes for a partner or someone far away. It is not the same as International Kissing Day, which falls on 6 July and began in the United Kingdom.
How people mark it
Rose Day has its rose and Teddy Day its soft toy. Kiss Day has no object, so it lives in small gestures, messages and calls.
- Couples keep it quiet: a forehead kiss when they meet, a blown kiss (a "flying kiss" in Indian English) from a train window, a goodnight kiss on a video call.
- Married couples bring back something they stopped doing years ago, like a forehead kiss before work or a note in the tiffin.

Writing a kiss: X, SWAK and the emoji
The letter X at the end of a note has meant a kiss for over a century. The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest clear example is from 1878, in Florence Montgomery's novel *Seaforth*, which mentions letters ending in a row of crosses. Nobody knows for certain where the idea came from. The story about medieval documents signed with a cross and sealed with a kiss is a theory, not a fact.
SWAK, short for "sealed with a kiss", was written at the end of love letters or on the back of the envelope. Dictionary.com dates its first record to 1925–30.
