About World Youth Skills Day
World Youth Skills Day is the United Nations day for training young people for work, held on 15 July. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, 15 July 2027. Sri Lanka proposed it and the General Assembly adopted it in December 2014. India has a direct link to the date: the Skill India Mission was launched on the first World Youth Skills Day, 15 July 2015.
Of all the UN days India marks, this one has the closest link to an Indian programme. The Skill India Mission was launched on the very first World Youth Skills Day, which is why 15 July shows up in every skills ministry press note.
Why is World Youth Skills Day on 15 July?
World Youth Skills Day is on 15 July because the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 69/145 by consensus on 18 December 2014 and fixed that date. Sri Lanka led the proposal, backed by the G77 and China. Its president had raised the idea at the General Assembly in 2013, and ministers and young delegates at the World Conference on Youth in Colombo in May 2014 supported it.
The purpose written into the resolution is narrow and practical: getting young people the skills they need for work, decent jobs and starting their own businesses. The first observance was on 15 July 2015.
The figures the UN quotes for 2023 explain the urgency. About one in five young people worldwide was not in employment, education or training, and the gap between young women and young men was wide: 28.1 per cent against 13.1 per cent. Youth unemployment stood at about 13 per cent, roughly 65 million people.
Why does 15 July matter in India?
On 15 July 2015, the first World Youth Skills Day, the Government of India launched the Skill India campaign in New Delhi. Four things started that day: the National Skill Development Mission, the National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana and a skill loan scheme. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, created the previous year, ran them.
Ten years on, the ministry's own account of the decade reports more than 1.63 crore people trained under PMKVY, and support to more than 14,500 Industrial Training Institutes. In February 2025 the government restructured the mission, merging PMKVY 4.0, the apprenticeship scheme PM-NAPS and the Jan Shikshan Sansthan scheme into a single programme.
Every 15 July the ministry holds a national event, and ITIs and training centres hold job fairs, certificate ceremonies and demonstrations where trainees show what they can build or repair.
What skill routes exist for a young person in India?
If you want the day to be useful to someone rather than decorative, this is the part to share.
| Route | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial Training Institute (ITI) | One or two year trade courses after Class 8 or 10: electrician, fitter, welder, mechanic, stenographer, dress-making | A student who wants to be earning within two years, or who prefers working with hands and tools |
| Polytechnic diploma | Three-year engineering diploma after Class 10, with lateral entry to the second year of a BTech | A student who wants engineering but not the long route through Class 12 and entrance exams |
| Apprenticeship | Paid on-the-job training with a registered employer, with a stipend, under the Apprentices Act | Anyone who learns faster at a workplace than in a classroom, including ITI and diploma holders |
| PMKVY short-term training | Short courses in a recognised job role, ending with assessment and a certificate | Someone already out of school who needs a certificate for a specific job |
| Recognition of Prior Learning | Assessment and certification of skills someone already has from years of work | Experienced workers, often in the informal sector, who have no paper to show for it |
What should you write on World Youth Skills Day?
Write about the specific skill. In India the biggest thing you can do in a message is treat a trade as a choice, not a consolation prize, because most young people in ITIs have heard the opposite from relatives all year.
Do
- Name the trade or subject. Specific beats general every time.
- Ask about the work itself, not the salary.
- Share a real opening, a scheme or a contact if you have one; that is the gift on this day.
Avoid
- Don't say "at least you have a skill to fall back on". It tells the person you see it as second best.
- Don't compare a diploma or ITI certificate with a degree in the same message.
- Avoid job-scam links in group posts. Fake training and placement offers spike around skill events.
For young people more broadly, see National Youth Day on 12 January and International Youth Day on 12 August. For schooling, see International Day of Education, and for the engineering side of technical work, Engineers' Day.
How to wish someone on World Youth Skills Day
A good message on 15 July respects the trade. Name what the young person is learning, welding, tailoring, coding, nursing, beauty work, and treat it as a career rather than a fallback. Avoid pity and avoid comparing it with a degree. For a first job or a first apprenticeship, a short congratulations with one practical line of advice is worth more than a long wish.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.
